Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Miver. Pours an opaque, cloudy amber golden with a small, off-white head. Sweetish aroma of overripe fruit and caramel. Quite full-bodied with sweetish caramel and overripe fruit. Has a kight bitterness in the finish. The archetype of an American style Barley Wine. 010209

From bottle, blindtasting #18. Pours murky dark orange to brown with a diminished off-white head. Dense malty, hoppy and slight yeasty aroma. Hoppy and roasted malt flavoured. Smooth, solid flavoured and alcohol presence yet with a lovely balance. Smooth hoppy and wooden finish.

Bottle... Pours dark – burnt orange when held up to bright light – with a small, creamy, khaki head. Decent retention. The nose is mostly grapefruit and pine, however, digging deeper, I came across plenty of brown sugar, caramel and toffee. Medium to full-bodied with tickling carbonation. Leans way toward the bitter side of balance – roasty, caramel sweetness overwhelmed by more-than-adequate, citrusy, earthy bitterness. Lengthy bittersweet (more bitter than sweet) finish. Bottle courtesy of scraff!
