Commercial Description:
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Color of black tea with a warm-toned creamy head. Mostly brown sugar and well-caramelized malt in the aroma. Flavor is relatively sweet but balanced with notes of scalded fruit and hop bitterness. This is a very nice, elegant barley wine.

Note: this is a rating for a bottle that’s almost a year old. I’ll try to re-rate when I get another bottle... and I will get another bottle!!!!! From a 22 oz into a pint glass. Pours with about a half inch of thick white head which dissipates in a couple minutes leaving no lacing. Aroma is of molasses, brown sugar and piney hops. Color is a dark copper brown; very, very good. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, great for a barleywine. Taste is creamy, piney, slight grapefruit, brown sugar. It’s both sweet and hoppy at the same time. I really like this one. It’s powerful all around but not over the top. Surprisingly well balanced for a big beer. I’m feeling the alcohol towards the bottom of the bottle but the alcohol is not overpowering in any way. A great beer, too bad Troegs only makes it only once a year.

Bomber that was held for about six months. Pours, dark amber (orangey), cloudy, nay head in a goblet. Hoppy aroma. Typical US barleywine, possibly a bit more fizz than normal for the style. Good balance here, and I found it less hoppy than Bigfoot and others (due to the aging?). Rich malts, dark fruits. Not much chocolate (contrary to what the label says), and piney hops. Simcoe are used, and yeah, there is grapefruit rind. Also some booze. i don’t like my BWs too hoppy, so aging this even for a little while helps. Very good.

Pours cloudy, medium brown with a rich, sticky head. Caramel aroma with hints of butterscotch and cellar dust, and more than a hint of alcohol. Flavor is resinous: tannic, wooden, spruce or cedar. This harmonizes well with the warmth and astringency of the palate. Very nice sipper. Caramel sweetness and alcoholic bite subsumed entirely into the background.

Deep copper pour with creamy tan head and lace. Aroma of roasted malt, light to medium citrus hops and nice dried fruit. Semi sweet malt, raisins, with a medium bitter finish. Aggressive carbonation from a medium/full bodied beer.

My bottle [22oz] shared with the gang at ’WaterlooWeekend Oct.’09’. Pours a murky mahogany with a small diminishing frothy tan head. Aroma’s quite hoppy along with caramel malt and some alcohol. Nice flavour, lots of leafy hops, lots of sweet malt and some alcohol and fruit. Average bodied. Great stuff!

Smells of sweet clementine and pine with the alcohol punch coming at the end. Flavor is a study of malt/hop balance. Taste like citrus rum cake, with orange peel being the dominant citrus here. The malt is present all the way through bringing a cake-like doughyness to the whole thing. There is a buttery presence throughout as well. Maybe a little too hot at the finish. Great slick mouthfeel that fills in all the crevices. Great Brew. Thanks Troegs. 2009 22oz.

Original Scratch 4-2007, 12 oz. bottle. Pours cloudy amber brown with a lot of small floaters and a decent tan head that subsides to a ring that leaves some spotty lace. Aroma is oaky and woody with dark fruits and citrus hops. Flavor is hop dominated with still lots of citrus character. The woody, bourbony vibe comes through as well, along with some sweet fruity malts in the background, somewhat overshadowed by the other, more prominent flavors. Medium-full bodied and smooth with a bitter hoppy finish. Some alcohol presence in both the nose and palate. Good and unique hop-forward barleywine. Surprised the hops held up so well after 2+ years of aging and that the alcohol is still noticeable.
