The amount of wavy yeast lines sitting in suspension at the bottom is ridiculous. Pour is a red-amber, VERY hazy with a quickly dissipating off-white/beige head. Aroma of cider vinegar, prunes soaked in brandy, plums, soured apricots, a strong dose of caramel and a good sour wheat twang. Not particularly full in aroma, but the notes there are quite interesting and give a nice raw vintage appeal to it (though perhaps a bit too cidery in the end). Flavor shows a good deal of sherry notes, light mandarin oranges, more unripe nectarines and apricots and a good base of caramel malt. Earthy notes are quite dominant on the finish, with more sour apple cider coming through and some dry peppery notes. I like the acidity level, which is particularly high for an American beer and even high for a wheat wine. The body is another story though, sad and tired, the carbonation level is extremely low, the body is very watery and the gritty sediment does not help in such a watery body. They sure put a hell of a lot of time in to these, it seems, why don’t they cork it? Still, a great wheat wine, and very stylish, IMHO. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 2, 2005 Bottle has lots of carbonation, started pouring out before I could get the cap off. Pours a hazy bright amber color. Very nice white head, dissapearing fast. Aroma is of white wine, musty, with alcohol dominating the nose. Flavor is acidic, full of sour apple, and alcohol. Still lots of carbonation, which adds to a very clean finish. Interesting...
Huge thanks to ZacIsABoy and Footbalm for getting this beer to me!!! Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA

No real barleywine character to this beer. Aroma and flavor is orange with some yeasty wheat. More of a summer wheat in my opinion. Pailhead (2602), Allen Park, Michigan, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 24, 2005 Bottle: Smells a little like watered down orange juice. Pours a cloudy reddish-orange with a small white head. LIght citru flavor with some light caramel. Doesn’t really taste too much like a barley wine, just a sligjt barley wine presence in the finish. Not a bad beer, but not a good barley wine if that’s what you’re looking for. Thanks go to Styles. 11026 (1779), Alabama, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 23, 2005 Bottle from Styles. Hazy medium amber color from a bottom of the bottle pour. A little skunky??? White head. Not really impressive to me in aroma or flavor. I didn’t really pick up any typical wheat bear flavors or aroma’s. Alcohol was warming and seemingly well disguised. THe aroma is a spicy one, reminds me of a spiced condement. Beyond that its rather yeasty and malty, and a good blend of each, and a bit of peach in the background. Flavor has kept up amazingly well, which isnt a big suprise. I notice first banana and ginger, then some soft peach nots, clove and coriander. Quite a soft flavor for such a brew, most likely from the aging. The mouthfeel really is just quite smooth. Well aged barley/wheat wine. Second bottle drank seems to have a remarkably wonderful bready flavor to it. Imagine a St Bernardus abt 12 combines with a strong wheat ale. This is just incredible. jeffc666 (1895), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 15, 2005 It’s a work night but it was a rather rough day so that is my justification for cracking open a 4 year old Wheat Wine that is 10%+ abv and comes in a nice foil capped 750ml bottle. Here we go.
The Pour- Hazy dark amber with a frothy off-white head. It only laces a wee bit.
The Aroma – Very interesting thing I have here. Spicy pepper and yeast are dominant, is this a saison? Some light alcohol pops up but is very subdued compared to the overall spiciness. There is of course some sweetness in there but it is hard to pin down.
The Flavor – Caramel and alcohol followed by some butterscotch, no lots of butterscotch. Melon and oak also come through. It seems that the wheat is really only present in the aftertaste, mainly as a bit of nuttiness.
The Feel – Soft and dry up front then some alcohol warmth followed by a dry finish. Fairly full bodied though the dryness makes it seem lighter.
The Thanks – Many thanks to a great RateBeerian living in Ohio for the chance to try this creation. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 9, 2005 Big thanks to footbalm for this one......THE PRE_JUDGEMENT!: I prejudge all beers the same way I prejudge all members of the Dallas Cowboys...basically decent until proven otherwise, although I know most of them are felons.....THE INITIAL_POUR: The initial pour gave a turbid dark straw color and aroma of big fruit, candi sugar, malt, honey, some hops. The taste was fruity, with melon, some apricot, candi sugar, vanilla, black pepper. Smooth palate that finishes bone dry, like a great chardonnay.....THE REPOUR: The repour was more turbid, with heavier fruit flavors and an almost apple cidery appearance and flavor profile with less dryness.......THE VERDICT!!: I declare thus; this beer is innocent of sucking ass and guilty of being slightly under-rated. So sayeth the Honorable Judge Doc Lock!
