Commercial Description:
Bare Tress Weiss Beer is a unique Barley Wine Style Ale. It is brewed with 57% wheat, 43% barley, and German hops. We boil the 25.2 Plato wort for three hours. Then we start the fermentation with our Hefe Weizen yeast and finish it with a Scottish Ale yeast. Bare Tree is then oak aged for over one year before its release. The resulting product is extremely complex with flavors of caramel, melon, apricot, vanilla, oak, black pepper, and subtle banana. The flavors come in large part from the raw ingredients and this will vary from year to year. Bare Tree is ready to drink now, but like wine, will age in the bottle for the next several years. So, whether you decide to enjoy a bottle now or wait many years, the Two Brothers family offer a toast: “Within ever bare tree lives the promise of a new life.” CHEERS.

After the Fort Wayne Ale Fest 2004, BigBadBear, Flemdawg, JSquire, Hotstuff, and Silphium came over to my place for a tasting. This was our seventh brew of the evening provided by Brad (Silphium). This brew poured a medium sized head of off-white colored mostly lasting bubbles that left behind a poor lacing. The body was hazy uncarbonated and light brown colored. The aroma was vinous alcohol and malty. The mouth feel was just as vinous with a malty fruity palate that was very biting from start to finish. The flavors contained notes of strong hops malts and mild vinous port like notes.

I liked this much better than the 2002 version I tried last year. This beer poured cloudy yellow-orange, with a medium off-white head. Very apricoty, tangy aroma with plenty of ethanol. The somewhat peachy flavor was also punctuated by strong notes of alcohol and the tangy sweetness of wheat. Luckily, the fruit flavors did not have the "rotten" feel I detected in the 2002 version. Nice, fruity malt with a hint of earthiness and unfermented sugars. A good beer.

Rich flavor with caramel notes, subtle apple peel and butterscotch. Head is non-existant though poured forcefully. It has a slight bitter finish but overall a nice palate. Pretty damn good, but not as complex as one might expect.

2001...been saving this for 3 months, hope it’s worth it... Hazy, orange color, slight white head. Fresh nose, citric, orangey, but a bit flat and metallic. Doesn’t jump up much. Mmmm, tangy, slightly tart taste, very fruit-forward, orange all over, with a banana touch coming through, a bit of pepper, a whisper of apricot, and, yes, a hush of vanilla, too. An interesting approach, but I still am unconvinced of how they can call this a barleywine..there seems to be nothing in common with any bw I’ve ever had before. Maybe because none of them were wheat beers? Wonderful texture, though, practically floods the palate, with the bright, full fruit, thick, and tasty texture. Yum, and yum, and yum. Good, goody, McGumdrops! I’m going to enjoy this big ol’ bottle all the way to the end!

A different twist on the barleywine - bright ornage, crystal clear body. A nice little bit of bitter hops to complement the mild sweetness. Highly yeasty, bready. Citrus notes are quite juicy. No head, and tiny bubbles of carbonation. Spices galore.

Quite a unique barleywine - burnt orange in appearance, low carbonation - tart, musty, very belgian-esque aroma - flavor is mildly belgian as well, as the barleywine characteristics slowly settle in - melon, caramel, chocolate, earthy, grassy notes - hops kick in in the finish - interesting stuff.

A bit soapy in the aroma. Nice amber body, but the head is lacking. the alcohol almost unbalances the rest fo the beer. This is lighter and not quite the flavor powerhouse of the other barleywines, but it's got something going for it. It's kind of like a giant hefeweizen and I like it.

After see BBB63 rating, I thought I had better pull this one off my shelf. Pours a lightly hazed honey amber color with a head that develops slowly and dissipates to form a small lid of small cream colored bubbles. Aromas of almond, drunk raisins and cream. Soft and mellow on the palate. Flavors of marzipan with a finish of vanilla, maple sap, honeydew melon and hearty bread. I do not think that another year or so would hurt this one. Just noticed the hops on the exhale, actually was looking for the alcohol but found hop. Impressive. I do feel the alcohol. A fine winter warmer. The finish is SO inviting that it calls you back for more. I now know how the word intoxicating evolved.
