Medium orange color, certainly light in color for what is essentially called a barley wine or wheat wine, but don’t get stuck on that name. Has a very spicy , Fantome-like nose with a similar thick and fizzy mouthfeel... flavors of apple cider, apple juice, pears, white grapes and a hearty sweet wheatgrass and grain character. Gloying sweet at the end, very interesting overall. Fits the bill more as a saison, tripel or witbier or some sort. I like experiemental styles and new inventions. kane (111), USA

The aroma and taste both seem old. Plus this had more saison qualities than barleywine. For a saison this was fine as there is a lot of pepper, for a barley wine it is not very good as it lacks any malt or hop qualities. Unique. Cornfield (4938), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA

But then more scents reach the nose - melon, vanilla, caramel, light fruits. The taste, too, begins like a hefeweizen, but the traditional flavors are soon joined by pepper, a woodiness, warm spices, and alcohol. It’s got a warm, fruity alcohol finish. I suspect that this will age quite well.

Musty aroma, with notes of tobacco, whiskey, orange citrus, tomato juice, and black pepper. Very acidic flavor, with peppery, spiced notes, wet wheat and a touch of apricot. Finish is very salty. Lacking the bitter hop dominance of earlier versions - this 2004 vintage is prematurely mellow, and I expect that it will not better with age. ToadMan (554), Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 19, 2005 Orang color with a moderate head, fairly cloudy and a decent amout of sediment. Aroma is rather weak, lots of citrus. Taste is orange with tones of lemon and grapefruit, fairly wheaty and a yeasty presence. Enough hoppieness to keep it from being what i would consider a fruity beer. Nice alcohol presence throughout. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

Kind of interesting to watch a bottle of beer continuously foam out the top into the bathtub... Poured a murky orange color with a towering head. Very spicy aroma with some odd sourness to it. Woah. More sour in the taste. It reminded me of a lighter sour wheat version of a gueuze. The spice turns into a raw pepper assult. A small barley finish? Tasty, but a strange barley wine. Fruity and spicy aromas of bananas, cloves and vanilla. Wheat flavor with pear, vanilla and bubblegum. Full bodied with a full and thick mouthfeel, soft carbonation, finishes sweet and mildly sour, alcohol well hidden, very nice.
