| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 2, 2009 In short: A fruity barley wine with weird/off fruity flavours. Drinkable.
How: Bottle 750ml. 2007 vintage. Consumed when 1.5 year old
The look: Clear dark golden body topped by a small off-white head
In long: The nose is sweet and fruity with weird notes of white-grapes. The taste is fresh fruits in caramel. The body is pleasant but far from decadent like top American barley wines. The fresh fruits flavour (citrus and friends) is mostly ok although a bit unusual for the style with notes of pineapples. But really kills this beer is an annoying white-grape sourness. Fortunately this is not a very tasty beer so it remains drinkable despite some off flavours. Maybe I should try other vintages. Not a bad beer. This is a different beer, almost unusual, this isn’t your average barley wine. This is your below average barley wine. WisconsinBeer (534), St Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 18, 2009 2008 bottle. Pours a fizzy orange color, decent amount of carbonation. On a hot humid night like tonight this definitely hits the spot. Flavors of banana, ripe fruits, wheat and roasted barley. Finishes dry with notes of German hops present. This is 11% ABV? Damn, the alcohol is very well hidden. Complex yet simple, heavy but light. This beer is many things at once, but comes together in a homogeneous way. Nicely done. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 18, 2009 2008. Pours a very hazy lemon golden yellow with very very light white. Aroma is caramel and peach and apricot. Flavor is brown sugar, sweetened apricots and wheat. Body is creamy with mild carbonation. Best take on barley wine. tmoreau (601), Lombard, Illinois, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 10, 2009 08 bottle share at the 2 Bros. Tap House. Poured a slightly cloudy, orangy brown with a very modest, off white head and not much lacing. A variety of aroma and flavor notes were present with the list growing as it warmed. The aroma was initial light graininess, earthiness, and tartness, with spice and fruit notes, a hint of ripe banana and a touch of orange zest. The flavor added to these a hint of caskwood, sweetness, subtle alcohol, and appropriate hop bitterness. Have sampled often, even as vertical tastings, and am always surprised by the various complex notes from year to year. RCL (1496), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 4, 2009 375 mL bottle of the 2008. Aroma is banana skins, beechwood and a hint of butterscotch. Flavor is dry with a tiny twinge of tartness on the finish. Woody tannin-like astringency follows, but is pretty well integrated to the flavor. JaBier (1284), Capital City, Ohio, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 4/5 | 9/20 | Jun 1, 2009 Sampled at the Two Brothers tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 5/21/09. Cloudy amber pour with a thin off-white head. Skunky aroma with some hop and grainy malt. Banana yeast flavor without much else. Not a fan. DMRz (230), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 21, 2009 2008 bottle. Pours a tan-orange-brown color with a short white head. Aroma is similar to a hefe-weiss but with heavier bready oats, cardamom, and tangerine peel. The flavor is sweet like many barley wines, balanced by citrus and pine hops and a fruity orange finish. Refreshing, with just enough body and bitterness to match the initial sweetness. An interesting and enjoyable beer. tgncc (846), Bellmore, New York, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 12, 2009 Vintage 2008. The aroma is striking, VERY strong wheat, clove, fruit. Like an amped up hefeweizen. The appearance is truly unique, a clear orange brown, thin white head. It doesn’t quite resemble a hefe or a barley wine. The flavor is sweet, then earthy, wheat, spicy. No booze detectable, surprisingly. The finish is peppery, spicy, some piney hops. Not strongly bitter, but appropriate for the style. The mouthfeel is medium, slighly oily. If I had one complaint about this beer at all, it is that the flavors are slightly muted. The strong aroma implies a much more flavorable beer than I actually get here. Still enjoyable, a uniquely crafted beverage, definitely worth seeking out.
