Commercial Description:
Bonfire Dunkle Weiss is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This one’s a unique dark wheat beer with a delicious toasty character, just like fall. We brought the chocolate, so don’t forget the marshmallows! ""Bonfire Dunkle Weiss is a big, toasty and chocolaty version of our Ebel’s Weiss. This beer has subtle clove, banana, vanilla, and caramel notes along with a nice malt sweetness. It is perfect for those cool fall nights. We bring the chocolate you bring the marshmallows.""

Mildly hazy mahogany with a large tan head, tough to fill up my glass without a lot of foam coming out. Mild aroma of caramel malt, grains, light chocolate and just a hint of the weizen part of the equation (banana, clove and yeast). Flavors aren’t particularly strong either with some sweet malt, mild banana and yeast wrapped up in an over carbonated body. Ho-hum effort on this one.

Clear dark mahogany brown with a tall tan head. Malty yeasty aroma with slight banana. Sweet flavor profile. Smooth medium bodied. Not bad.

Bomber (2009) in a weizen; pours a deep, murky chestnut w/ an enormous sponge-like dirty brown head that gradually sinks into a spattering of bubbly pools; aroma is dominated by an off-putting soapiness, w/ undertones of bananas and sweet maltiness; flavor is mostly sweet and malty and the clove flavors are deceptively subtle; medium-bodied and finishes slightly metallic and sweet; tasty enough, getting better as it warms a little. Yet to have a real superb brew from this brewery outside the Cane and Ebel. Postscript: the aroma improves markedly when allowed to warm a little.

This was not a fancy bottle of beer but it was very drinkable--went extremely well with a picnic. Malty but not particularly sweet, with some gentle yeast notes and a flash of roast, but with a quick finish. Moderately carbonated. Pretty standard; you think it is slightly more exotic than a brown, but you’re not getting much more than that. But still, it’s drinkable. As it happened, we did have a fire in the fire pit that evening with s’mores (though I didn’t eat any).

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of malts, vegetables, and light roasting. Pours brown in color with a medium-sized tan head that diminished but lasted throughout. Hazy. Lightly sparkling. Flavor is slightly sweet. Tastes of malts, smoke, slight vegetables, and dark bread. Medium body. Bubbly, slightly dry carbonation. Average to lively carbonation. Slightly sweet, malty, vegetable, and slight smoke finish is slightly dry.

22oz bottle, no date from the GeneralGao--thanks Colin! Clear deep brown with a one finger beige head, down to a thick ring and thin film rather quickly. Aroma of dirty bananas and some toast. There is also a bit of candle wax. Flavor adds a bit of an overripened lemon, and the finish turns a bit roasty and dirty. Low prickly carbonation with light body. This was not very good.

(bottle) Pours dark brown with reddish tinges and a light tan head. The head quickly fades to nothing. Aroma is a bit off, with some lemon peel, ample wheat, must, with an undertone of banana and some clove. The toasty malt wasn’t there in the beginning, but it does show up as this warms and it gets a bit sweeter too. Taste is pretty decent, with a lot of toasted malt, chocolate, banana, and a slight wheat twang with brief clove kick on the finish. A hint of yeast as well. Medium mouthfeel with ample carbonation. Pretty decent, but it doesn’t really stand out.
