Commercial Description:
Cane and Ebel is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This unique red rye beer is full of hop flavor and aroma. We add 35 pounds of Thai palm sugar to each batch. The sugar does not add much sweetness to the beer, but rather a fruity and vanilla-like flavor. A new hop variety called Summit is really showcased here. This 18%AA hop is also very aromatic which gives a pungent citrus aroma. Then we heavily dry hopped the beer with Simcoe.

Bottle: Pours a brown/reddish orange with a strong tan head. The aroma is rich with bready rye character. There’s also a fruity hop presence, giving it tropical fruit undertones, covered by some brown sugar sweetness. Creamy body with a chewy feel. Rich rye presence in the flavor- bready with dark caramel malt, lots of grainy/seedy flavors. Has some subtle fruity background notes of maple covered mango. Smooth bitterness in the finish. Nice and tasty stuff.

Bottle pours deep amber brown with little head that reduces to a surface haze and ring. The aroma is fruity, orange, sour cherry, and caramel. The flavor is sweet up front, spicy, rye, and a fresh hop finish that does not disappoint. The palate is rich and filling. Overall, a fine beer.

Moderate, sudsy off-white head and bright amber body. Nice spicy blend of rye, sweet crystal malt, and earthy hops in the nose. Smells like sweet spiced bread. Pleasant finish is crusty, crisp and bitter. Very solid red rye beer. Worthy of revisiting.

Dark brown or red color with a thin head. Strong pine hop aroma, along with rye and caramel malt. Very crushing pine hop flavor. Massive acidic bitterness. Light sweet malt and sugar background, but it is fairly well crushed by the bitterness.

Pours a deep ruby/amber/brown with a medium bubbly/creamy off white head. Aroma of fresh citrusy hops, a lot if orange, some grapefruit, also getting some mango and floral notes. The caramel malt is there along with toffee, nuts and light rye notes. Flavor of caramel, rye, toffee, nuts, orange, lemon, fresh American hops. Reminds me a little bit of Alpha King if the king had some rye and more specialty malt. Well done!

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours a dark copper amber brew with a thin beige head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and off-white head. Aroma of citrus fruit and zest, candi sugar, and a touch of multi-grain caramel malt. Taste is medium to full bodied, semi-sweet, with flavors of light caramel malt, candi sugar, a touch of vanilla, and some mild citrus hop character. Finish is still semi-sweet with a mild grapefruit aftertaste that lingers after the finish. Any strong alcohol presence is well hidden.

[Bottle, thanks Guerde!] Pours reddish-brown with a small tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is quite hoppy--grapefruit mostly, but there is also some solid maltiness that is noticeable beneath it and a few sweet notes as well. Taste is a little sweet up front, then the rye, but it is mainly hop dominant. There is also a touch of vanilla. Good mouthfeel, smooth and with a fairly dry finish with the hoppy bitterness really lingering in the back of the throat. Overall, I think this beer could stand to have less hops, but it was still quite enjoyable.

(bottle) Pours dark red with an off-white head. Aroma is really loaded with citrus, most notably pineapple, grapefruit, and tangerine, along with a candy-like aroma. When warmer, the aroma dies down a little bit, and grapefruit dominates. Taste is good with caramel, some vanilla, definite rye, and a light toasted malt flavor as well. A little bit of citrus is present too. Finish rounds out to a decent bitter hops. Medium mouthfeel, this is pretty good.
