Commercial Description:
Cane and Ebel is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This unique red rye beer is full of hop flavor and aroma. We add 35 pounds of Thai palm sugar to each batch. The sugar does not add much sweetness to the beer, but rather a fruity and vanilla-like flavor. A new hop variety called Summit is really showcased here. This 18%AA hop is also very aromatic which gives a pungent citrus aroma. Then we heavily dry hopped the beer with Simcoe.

Quite dark body with a medium tan head. Not much retention. Aroma is hop. Flavor is somewhat like an APA. It is highly hopped with plenty of caramel and a bitter hop aftertaste. But there is a different flavor early in the sip. It has a short lived vanilla spiciness and the feel is more creamy than resiny. Interesting beer to sample and another good offering from Two Brothers.

This happens to be one of my favorite beers. The pour produces a very pronounced tan head, and can be best enjoyed in a snifter to profile the aroma. At first, you’d expect a heavy and creamy beer based on the color, however its taste and mouthfeel are perfect, crisp but not light and malty, but not too much alcohol. The hops are perfectly in proprtion to the malt. A great beer!

Bottle. Deep dark garnet with a frothy almond colored head. Big aroma of orange and tea hops; sweet red berry notes as well. Spicy and sweet flavors. Noticeable spicy/tangy rye presence. Zesty citrus and resiny hop finish with a lasting bitterness. Overall a spicy, hoppy and substantially flavored rye-based beer. Really good.

Pours a caramel brown colored body with a smallish head and fair lacing. Mild aroma was hoppy bready and toasted red malt. Flavor contained notes of mild hops hops, bread and caramel. Short biting hoppy aftertaste.

Fresh Spring 2008 bottle. Wow, this one is loaded with resinous pine hops! The pour is a slightly hazy crimson red, with a minimal off-white head. Minimal spotty lacing is noted. The aroma shows massive, resinous pine and spruce hops. Caramel malts comprise the background, though they are ultimately dominated by the evergreen elements. Vanilla and oak complete the nose, which is somewhat intimidating, yet simultaneously inviting. Flavors are a touch more subdued, yet still substantially hoppy. Pine and spruce are joined by grapefruit, which takes a bit of the resinous edge off and replaces it with sharp citrus. Caramel malts reminiscent of an imperial amber ale balance things out a bit, with vanilla showing strong on the finish. Slightly boozy, as it is, this one goes down pretty smooth. Very nice, if you’re into massively hoppy, resinous brews. I enjoyed this one quite a bit, and I’m thrilled to have learned that there’s an imperial version!

Smells like somebody twisted up an immature spruce or pine branch in the northeastern US springtime. Ferruginous sciolism for an appearance. A little more than the ubiquitous ale palate. Long lasting logy medicinal preservative leviathan for a finish.

This one I could appreciate. On tap at Kuma’s. Distinct rye spiciness with a ton of high alpha going on, which is what I find often with two brothers, the perhaps slight overuse of bittering hops. But whatever, still had a nice full body to bring with the citrusy hop punch. Very nice. Have had this a couple more times and definitely seems a bit more well balanced. And it has a distinct similarity to an amarillo hopped beer, though it may be the simcoe. at any rate, an excellent go to.
