Commercial Description:
Cane and Ebel is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This unique red rye beer is full of hop flavor and aroma. We add 35 pounds of Thai palm sugar to each batch. The sugar does not add much sweetness to the beer, but rather a fruity and vanilla-like flavor. A new hop variety called Summit is really showcased here. This 18%AA hop is also very aromatic which gives a pungent citrus aroma. Then we heavily dry hopped the beer with Simcoe.

Nov. 2006 - High marks within style. Nice dark copper color. Malty with a lot of rye and a nice hop finish that wasn’t overly bitter. Got a little sweeter as it warmed. Full thick flavor...best rye beer to date for me.

A nice and different American Strong. Aroma was so so. Caramel malt, hops and an almost root beer type smell. Pour was stunning. A nice deep burnt amber with a one finger tan head that laced the whole glass and stayed till the end. Taste was burnt caramel and brown sugar with a strong hoppy bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel was a little thick and the carbonation left before I was done with the 12 ounces. Different.

I get the ’Cane’ part. But what’s with Ebel? Bomber. Pours clear amber with a thin off-white head. Some unusual flavors in the aroma and taste that I’m not too motivated to try to decipher. Medium body. For whatever reason, this beer did almost nothing for me.

12 oz bottle. Darker brown with an odd reddish hue. Minimal aromas, but what is there seems to be sweetly malt and somewhat spicy due to...the hops? Body does have somewhat of a vanilla type texture and flavor throughout, which I kind of enjoy. The rye is not all that detectable, but the dry hopping of Simcoe definitely is - the hop notes linger as well! Overall, it’s strange, yet it intrigues me enough that my palate is into it!

Bomber. Medium brown with rubied highlights and a thin gray head. Sour and peppery nose. Medium body, fully fizzy and forward flavors: light pepper, sour, some biscuit. Long peppery finish. Weird and out of balance.

Draft. Pours dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is heavy handed rye with well-integrated but strong citrusy hops. Taste is what one would expect from the aroma. Grainy, grassy, rye, bitter and hoppy, though drinkable. This reminds me of Red’s Rye from Founders. I am not a huge fan of this style of beer but this was well done.

Bomber from tytoanderso; Nose of pine and citrusy hops with some brown sugar and light spices; clear rusty brown with a medium straw head; flavor is sweet, surgar frosted rye bread with a little background hop bitterness that lasts to the finish!

Bottle. Pours opaque brown with a tint of red. Creamy little head fades away, with some good lacing left behind. Aroma is real sticky hops. Piney. Definite rye influence. There’s a feel of walking in a forest at dawn. Flavor is sweet malts and hops and rye, of course. Molasses, grapefruit, as well. Sweet and sticky. Quite drinkable.
