Commercial Description:
Cane and Ebel is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This unique red rye beer is full of hop flavor and aroma. We add 35 pounds of Thai palm sugar to each batch. The sugar does not add much sweetness to the beer, but rather a fruity and vanilla-like flavor. A new hop variety called Summit is really showcased here. This 18%AA hop is also very aromatic which gives a pungent citrus aroma. Then we heavily dry hopped the beer with Simcoe.

12oz bottle from Liquor Barrel in GV. Deep brown color, thick white foam. Heavy rye aroma with a hint of the sugar coming through and slight hops as well. Rye is very prominent in the flavor, sweet and bitter also. Very nice combo of flavors.

BPW #89 Severed from a 12 oz bottle that I picked up at FUBOB’s. Appearance is a deep coper hue with a soapy light brown head. Aromas are sweet with a rye malt influence. Flavors are rye malts, with some other malts in the profile. A little earthy as well. Not too bad.

Dan’s Bachelor Party Extended Weekend Rating #85 of 90. Bottle Dan picked up at some point this long weekend (thanks). Pours dark red/brown. Has a bready/malty nose. Fruity, sweet, bready, malt flavor. Not terrible...a little oxidized maybe.

09.04.09 Pours mahogany with a 1-2 finger chunky off white head that has decent retention. Aroma is citrus, grass, pineapple, straw, light vegetal notes, compost, caramel, and sweet bread crust. Flavor is caramel, toasted grain, salty beef broth, rye, lots of earth, strange, fruity notes, lots of citrus, bitter bile like flavor - weak, yet pretty off putting (really freaking strange), toasted grain, rye, brown rice, maple, and some floral notes. Finish is planty hops, sweet floral notesI am not sure if there is something really off with me tonight or this bottle, or this stuff just tastes this friggin strange. I will stop here and continue this rating with one of the other bottles in the pack later, if my opinions change with a fresh palate that is. {Update 09.13.09 on the last bottle of the pack now and I can’t really say that I enjoyed any of them more than the first, I just really don’t like this beer too much, not absolutely terrible, but definitely not worth the price tag for me.} Palate is medium bodied with a slightly slick entry and dry finish, low to medium carbonation.

bottle: dark coppery brown. With very thin beige head and dissipates. Arouma of grass and prunes . Taste is nice and smooth with a bit of a alcohol bite at the end. Sharp carbonation.

The appearance is glassy, glowing deep cherry red. Puffy white head that shrinks to an uneven foam. Lots of tiny carbonation. Smooth honey goes with the more bitter amber malts. Hint of a lacquer. A mild resiny hop. Too much metallic and furniture polish. The taste has a metallic, nail-polish taste. But otherwise has a nice, woody hop, along with bitter -- slightly sour -- amber malt. The feel is smooth but with medium body. A little bite at the end. Not bad but just a strange, metallic taste that overshadows the rest. Too much lacquer.

Bottle, 12oz. A clear, copper-colored beer topped by a small, beige head. Resiny, citrusy hops and a heavy malt backbone in the aroma. Beef-stocky matls, caramel and a good dash of resiny, citrusy hops in the mouth. Full-bodied and slightly warming. The finish is of the lasting kind, with a heavy maltyness and lots of citrusy, resiny hops. A nice one. 090704
