Commercial Description:
Cane and Ebel is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This unique red rye beer is full of hop flavor and aroma. We add 35 pounds of Thai palm sugar to each batch. The sugar does not add much sweetness to the beer, but rather a fruity and vanilla-like flavor. A new hop variety called Summit is really showcased here. This 18%AA hop is also very aromatic which gives a pungent citrus aroma. Then we heavily dry hopped the beer with Simcoe.

08 Bottle - Thanks JCB! - Pours a clear, dark reddish amber with a small off white head...aroma is rye grass and sticky malt, some floral hops as well...flavour is smooth up front that turns into a pleasant burnt sugar bitterness...not terribly complex, nice and creamy, lingering taste of perfume and caramel...alcohol completely hidden..great find...

(12oz bottle) Pours a medium brown with good head and big oily bubbles on top. Great lacing on the glass. Nose is rye and light caramel. Taste is mildly bitter hops with sweet caramel backing it up. Oily and light body with superb mouthfeel.

Bottle at The Winking Lizard into pint - this is my one gripe with the place is everything is poured into a pint and they always pour it badly, what gives?! Anyways...Pours a dark ruby color with an off white ring but no real head (thanks pint glass!).Taste is like a low abv barley wine. Subtle hoppy bitterness in aroma and definitely get the sweetness from the palm sugar in both the nose and flavor but with the alc. more upfront in the flavor.

Served cellar temp into snifter (Thanks Skinnyguy!). Pours a beautiful dark, but crystal clear, red color with a big creamy frothy off-white head that leaves some nice lace -- though it did take quite a high and aggressive pour to stir up the head. The aroma is richy and full of malty goodness. A warm breadyness, christmas cake, not much hops, some cherries. Flavor is good, though less robust and full. There is more of a hop presence, but it is all hop bitterness, which is alright, but simply throws the beer off balance without any hop flavor. Still enjoyable. Creamy with minimal carbonation and a medium body. Overall: great look, feel, and aroma, which lead the flavor to be a bit of a disappointment. Good beer on the whole though.

Aluminum bottle shared with the guys at the Barrios’ 500th Swallow Tasting. Good clear red pour with minimal tannish ring of head. Nose of piney citrus hops and caramel. Flavor is a bit bitter but has a brown sugar quality. Nice finish. Cool name.

Pours a fading beige head with a brown/ruby body. Aroma is sticky, fresh hops and caramelized malt. Flavor is dark sugar and a little floral. Finish is sticky and not overly bitter.
