Commercial Description:
Cane and Ebel is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This unique red rye beer is full of hop flavor and aroma. We add 35 pounds of Thai palm sugar to each batch. The sugar does not add much sweetness to the beer, but rather a fruity and vanilla-like flavor. A new hop variety called Summit is really showcased here. This 18%AA hop is also very aromatic which gives a pungent citrus aroma. Then we heavily dry hopped the beer with Simcoe.

Clear, reddish, light brown liquor. A blend of large and small bubbles in the head--dies quickly. Good lace on the side of the glass. Nice blend of malt and hop in the aroma. The hop smells fresh, but is subtle to allow the dryness of the malt to come through. Dry brew on initial taste. The hop takes over after that. Nice long aftertaste. Good body with relatively low carbonation. Not creamy. A very nice, dry brew. At 7% abv, this is a deceptively strong beer for the flavor profile.

12oz bottle. This was a complete surprise. Never heard of this one but figured I should try a bottle for the sake of research. Really like it. Pours a dark red with a unique taste. Very drinkable. Will be getting more of these.

Bottle from Julio’s. Pours dark red with a sizable head. Aroma is bright of grapefruit and pine. Palate is medium, moderately carbonated . . . very supportive of big flavor. Flavor starts with red, sweet fruit, maple sugar, malt and floral hops. From mid-palate on this beer brings in spicy rye, caramel, and distinctive pine and flowery hops. Really nice blend, and the alcohol is even well-hidden. A great drinker: balanced, flavorful, spicy, and hoppy.

Bottle. Aroma of sweet, nougaty malt, spicy grain notes, citrus notes, sort of in the tangerine area. Flavor continues to be quite fruity, citrus and raspberry. Huge sweetness from the malt, but a fair amount of that spicy grain and what seems to be a heap of hops balances is out enough. Not sure I’d really care to return to this beer with all the sweetness, but pretty tasty to try.

Pint served at the Tap House. Poured a dark walnut brown with some ruby tones showing through. The head was off white/light tan, foamy, and left some excellent lasting lace. The nose presented some initial tartness, as a combo of spice, citrus, pine and malt sweetness. The flavor followed up with a touch of caramel and some solid rye dryness and hop bitterness that lasted through the finish. The texture was a little syrupy, but the body was medium to full. A very decent brew
