Commercial Description:
Cane and Ebel is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This unique red rye beer is full of hop flavor and aroma. We add 35 pounds of Thai palm sugar to each batch. The sugar does not add much sweetness to the beer, but rather a fruity and vanilla-like flavor. A new hop variety called Summit is really showcased here. This 18%AA hop is also very aromatic which gives a pungent citrus aroma. Then we heavily dry hopped the beer with Simcoe.

Moderate, sudsy off-white head and bright amber body. Nice spicy blend of rye, sweet crystal malt, and earthy hops in the nose. Smells like sweet spiced bread. Pleasant finish is crusty, crisp and bitter. Very solid red rye beer. Worthy of revisiting.

nice up-front-spicy-rye balanced by citrusy-hops. well done, though i’m not really a huge fan of rye as more than just a subtle background note of complexity.

I don’t get much off the nose, only light scallions and cardboard, maybe a little apricot but they’re all muted. The taste is pleasant and mild from start to finish. Flavors of vanilla sugar cookie and light pine are present but I have to believe they are purposely understated unless this brew is too old already. Mouthfeel makes this beer very easy to drink with it’s light carbonation and smooth palate. I imagine this to be what fermented green tea would taste like. Decent beer but underwhelming. Thanks Two Brothers. 2009 12 oz.

Draft at Barley Island Broad Ripple. Pours a deep rich looking red with a bit of an off white head. The nose is full of piny hops with a bit of a cara malt backbone. Lots of good hop flavor right up to an evergreen finish that I’m not crazy about. Medium body and a mild bitter finish.

Pours brown with a ruby hue and a light beige head. Caramel malt aroma with a hint of rye bread. The flavor is much better and more diverse. Sugar cane, bread, some candied fruit and some hops on the finish. Very enjoyable.

I like the rye content but the hoppiness seems to have burnt itself it out. Texture isn’t light which is a good thing. I do detect the simcoes in the aftertaste which enhance the flavor but I’m not sure the Summit hops mesh well (seem overdone). The hops almost give this beer an overripe flavor. My verdict:an interesting beer with some nice malts but way too bitter (I’m usually a hop head).

bottle from WHole Foods -- "Best by 11/1/09." pours a slightly hazy, light brown, minimal fine head. sweet aroma with a deep resin-y pine-y-ness, really carmelized pineapple and honey-sweetened tea. flavor is more bitter, pine needles and bittersweet caramel. nice sticky/chewy texture and modest mild bitter finish.

12 oz bottle from Capones. Poured a clear super deep red with an average sized frothy off white head. Aroma was lots and lots of pineapple, caramel, unbaked rye bread, citrus rind. The body is on the fuller side with a creamy yet oily feel. The flavor is loaded with pineapple and sugar along with some toffee, vanilla extract and an aftertaste of slightly overtoasted brown bread. The pineapple aroma/flavor is just too overpowering for me to really enjoy this one.
