Commercial Description:
Cane and Ebel is one of a series of special limited-run beers in styles that are more extreme or unusual. This unique red rye beer is full of hop flavor and aroma. We add 35 pounds of Thai palm sugar to each batch. The sugar does not add much sweetness to the beer, but rather a fruity and vanilla-like flavor. A new hop variety called Summit is really showcased here. This 18%AA hop is also very aromatic which gives a pungent citrus aroma. Then we heavily dry hopped the beer with Simcoe.

[Bottle, thanks Guerde!] Pours reddish-brown with a small tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is quite hoppy--grapefruit mostly, but there is also some solid maltiness that is noticeable beneath it and a few sweet notes as well. Taste is a little sweet up front, then the rye, but it is mainly hop dominant. There is also a touch of vanilla. Good mouthfeel, smooth and with a fairly dry finish with the hoppy bitterness really lingering in the back of the throat. Overall, I think this beer could stand to have less hops, but it was still quite enjoyable.

On tap at Rattle ’n’ Hum, NYC. Clean cereal and hop taste. IPA with some nice bready dimension. A little sourness in the finish. Nice rye flavour.

Brewfest NY 08. Man i wish i was able to write down notes at the fest, but it was pouring rain and I had an umbrella in one hand, and my drinking glass in the other. I remember this being pretty decent though. Obviously need to try it again.

Sampled at the NY Brewfest on 9/12. Not able to give a very accurate rating due to the sheer number of brews sampled.

Pours a medium brown. The nose is very floral with a hint of citrus. Comes across the palate with a little too much carbonation. Finishes extremely hoppy.
