My experience was different. I thought this had a straightforward earthy and caramel maltiness that finished with a little blunt bitterness. Pleasant, but I’m not seeing the complexity. phishpond417 (1953), Madison, Wisconsin, USA

It pours a copper colored body with a decent sized head. A unique beer for me, and im interested to try more. incutrav (576), Woodbury, Minnesota, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 8, 2008 A strange beer, good enough, but not very much like any biere de garde I have had. Dark red color. Aroma of caramel and lager yeast. Like the Flying Dog that preceded it, this also has a lager malt flavor, with very little hops and dry malt in the flavor, with just a little sweetness. Very much like an Irish or Scottish ale. stankenk (130), Maplewood, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 6, 2008 A rich amber colored, the nose is rather subtle with a caramel malt. A very crisp balanced finish. It says on the palate then slowly dissipates. Thanks Heritage Liquor! Skyview (4057), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 5, 2008 Picked up single 12-oz bottle at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours a clear amber brew with a thin off-white head that dissipates to a thin film and ring. Aroma of powered caramel malt, some grassy hops, a touch to toffee and herbs. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of dark biscuit malt, grassy hop and a touch of toffee. Finish has a good balance of biscuit and bitterness that slowly disappears after the finish. hopscotch (5500), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

Beautiful, clear, amber/copper ale with a small, creamy, off-white head that seems to last forever. Malty, earthy aroma with toffee, caramel, straw and random herbs. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and gentle carbonation. Sturdy caramel malt backbone is balanced by medium spicy and herbal bitterness. Also, some essences of fuzzy and tropical fruits. Hearty, moderately bitter finish. Not what I expected. A very pleasant surprise! Big-time thanks to headbanger for floating this bottle my way! drock14 (5), Illinois, USA does not count | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 20, 2008 Bottle. Sweet caramel and maltiness on the scent, the flavor seems to come though in the same way, a little more bitter than I was expecting. Not overly malty, but certainly more malty than hoppy. Solid mouthfeel. A bit of spice at the end, overall this is a tasty brew.
