Fresh grainy malt character with some sprucy hop presence that melds together well. Nice medium tartness and moderate residual sweetness. Good, interesting biere de garde. In the way it is spicy but sweet and malty and not overly hopped and in the way it is slightly sour like some dubbels smell in the end of the glass. I have just come in from pitching the hey and it is a crisp autumn day and I must say to my French housewife Leave me alone to my beer and later we will make love but for now there is only a bierde de garde. ceejmomeechmo (58), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 7, 2005 Bottle. Pours reddish amber with a little off white head. Aromas were very malty with earthy undertones. Flavors were similar to aromas with a strong finish. Overall it was quite enjoyable. gws57 (1144), Saint Charles, Illinois, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 7, 2005 Had this on draught in Geneva, Illinois. Orangish-reddish pour with little head, quite malty although not much else. Somewhat dissapointing production coming from a great microbrewery. tomxcs (315), Golden, Colorado, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 20, 2005 Updated: Jul 21, 2005Poured a reddish golden color with a nice, small head. Aroma is very earthy, flowery, with lots of sweet malt and a hint of white wine -- vinous you might say. Taste is malty, slightly toasty, with a nice sourness at the end. Hops are evident; dry & tingly mouthfeel. I thought this beer had a decently full body compared to the other bieres des gardes that I’ve tried. This was a really nice drink, appropriate for a warm mid-May Friday evening. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | May 17, 2005 Pours copper color with not much head at all. Aroma is caramel malts and a touch of grapes. Tastes about the same as it smells. Starts out sweet then finishes slightly bitter and sour. Light and watery on the palate. Very unique flavor I guess when I bought this I didn’t know what to expect. I thought it would be more of an amber ale. It was a surprise indeed.
