Commercial Description:
Okay, it was going to be a Maibock, but you know how mischievous goats can be...anyway we ended up with this delight. What to do but add a crack of black pepper? Around here we call it Goatzilla, but don't let that fool you, it's mellow as a kitten.

Bomber pours a lightly hazed dark gold body with a small offwhite head that is quickly gone. Aroma is buttery toffee with hints of the black pepper and fruity and floral notes. Rich and coating on the palate with some alcohol warming. Taste is malty sweet caramel and buttery toffee with overripe red apples, bittering hops and warming alcohol. Nicely done. Seems more like an imperial maibock than a doppel but drinks just fine.

Consistent with the description on the label, this beer struck me as more of a "super-maibock" than a doppelbock. It was light and golden with plenty of super-sweet malty cereal-ness. While I’m not a big fan of that sweet grainy flavor, I did enjoy this beer. It has a spirited booziness which makes it somewhat complex, and had a bit of bitterness as it warmed up in my mind. Bock beers are not my style; but if I were to choose one this would be pretty high on my list.

Copper Color with Orange Hue. No Head. Light Syrupy Maltiness and Spices on the Nose. Smooth, Very Thin Bodied Beer. Very Soft for the Alcohol. Light on Flavor..Subtle Sweet Malt, Pepper, Spices...Alcohol Well Hidden. A Seductive Drinker.

Hazy orange beer, thin white head. Very sweet honeyed aroma, a touch of tobaccoish aroma as well. Sweet fruity nose that seems a bit unusual. The flavour is fairly earthy, a bit leafy and tobaccoish. Sweet flavour on the back with a touch of pepper as well.

Copper with good head. Very tart, and light of body, with favors of lemon, caramel and black pepper. Excessive tartness without the malts/body to balance, make this a very awkward concoction.

Bottle sampled on 9/20/06: Pours a clear copper orange with a thin, wispy off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramely German malt and some peppery spice. Body starts with a sweet caramely maltiness and some more peppery spice toward a drier slightly warming finish. Decent doppelbock that is fairly true to style, but would be better without the black pepper.

Clear reddish copper color, with a slim head of off-swhite suds. Okay head retention and lacing. Caramel malt in the aroma is nice. The flavor is sweet, but not overly so. Good sweet caramel malt up front, a little fruity, with a hint of licorice. There is a dry toasted malt in there too, with some moderate hop bitterness for balance. I don’t get much in the way of a cracked pepper flavor - but there is a zip to the carbonation and mouthfeel that suggests its presence. Smooth beer, but with the licorice, fruit, and pepper it comes off tasting and feeling more like an ale. Definately not your ’clean’ lager beer.
