Commercial Description:
Okay, it was going to be a Maibock, but you know how mischievous goats can be...anyway we ended up with this delight. What to do but add a crack of black pepper? Around here we call it Goatzilla, but don't let that fool you, it's mellow as a kitten.

(22oz bottle) Crystal clear amber body with big beige head. Aroma is moderately sweet, plum, chocolate, caramel, light nut. Taste is the same, with an alcohol warming in the finish. Smooth medium-full body that holds the alcohol well -- its origins as a Maibock are evident in the mouthfeel. Regardless of its style, however, it’s wonderful.

22oz bottle shared courtesy of dickinsonbeer (thanks!). Poured a deep orange/amber color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of black pepper, caramel, and a little earthy. Tastes of lighter black peppers, caramel, and some toffee. Has a honey sweetness to it.

(22oz bottle) Pours a hazy golden brown body with a small white head. Aroma of toffee, maple, nuts, and some pepper. Flavor of caramel, light fruitiness, apple, and alcohol.

Bottle sampled on 9/20/06: Pours a clear copper orange with a thin, wispy off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramely German malt and some peppery spice. Body starts with a sweet caramely maltiness and some more peppery spice toward a drier slightly warming finish. Decent doppelbock that is fairly true to style, but would be better without the black pepper.

Bottle... Clear amber lager with orange highlights and a small, fizzy, cream-colored head. Good retention. Malty, spicy aroma with notes of toffee and caramel, suggestions of black pepper and straw and maybe a mild apricot ester. Rich, malty flavor with plenty of bitter hops for balance. Maybe not true to style, but I like the balance provided by the earthy, spicy hops. Full-bodied and silky with medium carbonation. Lengthy, bitter, pink grapefruit finish. A big THANKS goes out to WBC for providing the bottle!

Hazy orange beer, thin white head. Very sweet honeyed aroma, a touch of tobaccoish aroma as well. Sweet fruity nose that seems a bit unusual. The flavour is fairly earthy, a bit leafy and tobaccoish. Sweet flavour on the back with a touch of pepper as well.

More amber than blonde, but who’s quibbling? The interesting bit is the addition of black pepper. (Personally, I’m waiting on some brewer to get truly gutsy and and add gherkins to the mash, an idea that RAYBOY01 and I came up with on a night of heavy sampling.) It’s there in the nose, very lightly, along with the sweet caramel and bready malts that one wants in a bock. Smooth. The flavor is a continuation of the nose, but pretty light for a bock. Tasty enough with a sweet and faintly peppered finish. The hefty abv is well hidden until it hits the bloodstream. Okay, but nothing I’d go out of the way for.
