Commercial Description:
Black Ale Brewed With Coffee Beans RED EYE Coffee porter is one of a series of special limited run beers in styles that are more EXTREME or unusual. Porter’s an elusive dark ale that has been constantly changing during its long 300 year history. We figured it was about RIPE for some REINVENTION. 23.3 Plato 40IBUs 9.2 ABV

22oz bottle. Poured a dark black color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of coffee/coffee grounds, roastiness, and some chocolate. Tastes of coffee, roast, chocolate, caramel, and vanilla. The coffee was stronger in the aromas. The body was a tad on the thinner side with the alcohol content well hidden.

Tap at Ginger Man. Dark brown colour, thick sticky tan head. Aroma is quite coffee-laden. Lots of dark malts, some faint cherry sweetness and a bit of toasted grain. Flavour is also loaded with coffee and light roast. Lightly vegetal with a bit of cold coffee character. A fairly prominent bitterness that is somewhat atypical for the style. It’s a pretty nice coffee beer.

Bomber from the Binny’s Beverage Depot in Orland Park, Illinois: It pours an intense dark brown with a large cocoa colored head and sheets the glass with lace. The aroma is warm, dry coffee grounds, a touch of bittersweet chocolate, some roasted malt, and a hint of cigar smoke. Some alcohol warmth, a splash of cream, and a burnt nut bitterness are added to the flavor. It finishes on a lightly dry note. Not bad.

Dark brown with what appears to be a bit of rudy. Smaller tan head. Caramel, dark chocolate, coffee grounds and a bit of charcoal in the aromas. Acidic background, yet it still has a full feel. Berry and light coffee flavors in the front. Middle has some dark caramel and chocolate. I’m reminded of a Midnight Milky Way bar. Finish has some maduro tobacco. Seems to get thicker and more mouthcoating as you continue. Finish is a bit sharp, with creosote and burnt peanuts. Linger continues to be dry and with a bit too much scorched malt. If you like burnt coffee, you should like this one. I like the overall more than a the parts which seem to be a sharp stick in the eye at time.

Bottle from Jungle Jims. Poured black color with a large frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roasted malty and chocolate aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium dark chocolate and coffee bittersweet flavor with medium dark sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid complex beer.

Bomber. Poured burny umber with off-tan head. Nose was dark malt, dark choc, coffee, with a dark malty, cacao, and espresso flavor ansd some backup hops, a medium to light on the malt palate, and a mediocre complexity. The coffee is great in this, and it does not overpower the malt, which is a good thing. If you like coffee beers, you will enjoy this one.

Bottle from Archer Liquors. Pours very brown black with a dark tan head that is huge and sheets like a nito pour. Aroma is lots of coffee backed by mild chocolate. Medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor is coffee with a lot of something like mild chocolate. Not all that bitter. Quite chocolate. Very enjoyable.

Bottle and served in my Stone IRS snifter: Initial huge fluffy beige head which left excellent lacework upon the glass, solid deep brown hue. The aroma has notes of resiny and herbal hops, fresh coffee, chocolate, charred malts, pipe tobacco, and a hint of fig. The taste starts with a combination of bitter coffee and bitter hops with the sweet malt in the background. However the malt come forward a bit more towards the finish. Slight smoke, lacto twang, anise and alcohol noted on the finish. The aftertaste is actually nicely complex. The mouth feel is smooth and displays a very good body for a coffee imbued beer. Warming and inviting, this is darn nice coffee porter, dare I say almost Baltic in nature.
