Vinous aroma and flavor of an English barleywine. Esters and deeply roasted malts abound. Sweet chocolate, dark fruits and caramel stand out. Enough bitterness to keep things interesting and prevent the sweet malts from overwhelming my gustatory system. Medium to full-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Lengthy, chocolaty, bittersweet (more bitter than sweet) finish. SoLan provided the bottle. Thanks Alan! CaptainCougar (5530), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 2, 2007 Pours a transparent dark copper amber with a spotty-lacing, wispy light tan head. Aroma of lightly sweet, toasty, caramel and Munich malts has a touch of noble hops. Starts fairly sweet and earthy caramely with nice lightly floral noble hoppy balance toward a bittersweet earthy finish with some light fruity esters. A nice altbier. ¾ (5006), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 22, 2007 22oz bottle. Very dark for an altbier, dark brown and reddish in color. Toast colored brown head. Pretty nice nose, with lots of maple and red apple scents, lightly hoppy, lightly doughy, almost a bread crust and toast smell. Wet and lightly sweet up front, more coarse with toasted grains and lighter maple in the back, finishes slightly dry over the back. Good, but lacking depth, and it’s more of a generic strong amber ale than an altbier. Cornfield (4972), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 2, 2007 Deep mahogany body, reddish, with a tall, good lacing tan head. The aroma is sweet, dark caramel with light roasted malts, and a touch of chocolate. More complex flavor with the addition of mildly bitter nuts, caramel, and black pepper. Fairly decent brew.
