Tap at The Old Fashioned in Madison, WI - I was quite impressed with this - the smoke and chipotle pepper add a nice dimension, that compliments the roasted malts, but the spiciness never really becomes that strong, just a gentle spiciness that become peppery through the finish - there are some vanilla and cocoa flavors, and even a bit of berry-like character through the finish, but the chocolate, roasted malt, and light hint of spice and smoke are the stars of the show - well-balanced and tasty - it’s nice to see a pepper beer that doesn’t nail you over the head with the spiciness.

On tap - Poured dark brown with average tan head. Aroma - smoke, toasted malt and peppers. Flavor - very nice toasted malt taste with hint of smoke and a bit of coffee. Palate - light/medium mouthfeel with average carbonation. Finish is slightly dry and aftertaste is smokey. Overall - very nice beer and easy too drink. I could drink a few of these with no problem. I will be looking for this brew in bottles.

Sampled on draught: It poured an opaque black colour with a medium sized tan head. Fairly good retention, left behind plenty of sticky tan coloured lacing. A smokey nose- chipotle, toast and and some bbq notes. Wicked creamy mouthfeel, chewy at times- caramel, coffee and black licorice flavours. Will we see this in bottles? I hope so. Really tastey."

From Skyview’s growler. Black. Malt aroma. The smoke is found in the flavor, wih more moderately roasted malt. There is enough smoke here that it might be classified as a smoked beer rather than porter.

TAP: black pour, big head. Mild smoke on the nose, taste of mild smoke/pepper, a little creamy.

[Growler] shared at Skyview’s Lex/Larp Cellars Farewell. Pours a clear deep brown with a medium brown head. Aroma is roasted malts and a touch of smoke. Flavor is woody smoke, dry roasted malts, a touch of pepper, and brine. Good beer.

Growler courtesy of Skyview. Black color with a large head. Light chipotle smoke aroma with some roasted malts. Strong wood and smoke flavor. Light on the pepper spice, but enough to make it obvious it’s there. Plenty of roasted and chocolate malt. This is really good. It’s a great way to make a pepper beer: as an accent, not an alcoholic pepper smoothie.

Stacey and Nevin brought a growler to the Beer Barons Meeting.Pours a dark brown color with a small head. Great aromas of smokey roasted malts, caramel and just a tease of pepper.Flavor is of wonderful roasted malts and caramel and then that wonderful little tingle starts to form in your mouth!Nice medium body. I’v always been a big fan of there porters, and Benji just made them even more interesting!
