First to the nose was a rich caramel smell, followed rapidly and slightly overtaken by an enjoyable hop blending of grapefruit, herbs, pine, and wildflowers. This is a full-bodied, well balanced brew, the sturdy sweet caramel backbone standing up strongly to the surge of hoppy bitterness. Those hops win out in the end, leaving one with a prolonged bitter finish. A good treat for this hophead!

Sparkling copper orange in the glass, clear, with a peachish-tan frothy thick head. Good head retention. Sudsy oily lace. Smell is malty; hops character is grassy, buttery, and faintly lemony. Taste is earthy all the way through; begins as a dark prick on the top of the tongue that balances the grapefruit center; becomes a dirty dry finish wih a cottony mouthfeel. Sweetness is a burst of flat candy sugar right after the swallow. The hops in here are much more about bittering than flavor, and I tend to like my hops flavorful. The main push of the dry bitter comes 7 seconds into the finish, and there’s a bit of roasted corn flavor on the end. Not bad; not bad. jzzbassman (850), New Albany, Mississippi, USA

Citric, grapefruit aroma. Nice malt backbone with a nice bitterness, although not as bitter as advertised. Very nice IPA. Bockyhorsey (2552), Mesa, Arizona, USA

Refreshing brew that was rather smooth was expecting a big bitter beer and was plesently surprised. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA

Aroma of big grapefruit and floral hops and faintly through that a little caramel. Flavor is quite bitter in the fore.. Some good grapefruit and pine notes, and also lots of floral flavors. A touch of malt finds its way through in the middle and some pineapple and mango. A little caramel and a lot of biscuit. Finish is another bitter burst from the hops that leaves the end quite dry yet very clean. Not overly thick and heavy like other IPAs quite refreshing. Very nice.. black95tt (82), Doylestown, Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 31, 2006 Thanks to jjpm74 for this one! Aroma is less hops than I was hoping, but was still pleasant with some nice sweet caramel in the nose to satisfy. The flavor was very full and rich with a stout malty backbone and an abundance of citrusy flavor hops. All of this goodness followed by an assertive clean biterness that lingered for quite some time. The palate was sticky sweet for a beer of this style. Overall an excellent beer. Headbanger (1598), Aurora, Illinois, USA

This has a dazzling complex flavor that hangs on through the finish. Dry but not as bitter. If only you could harness flavor like this without the sweetness, but this brew I suspect is less sweet than other "extra IPA’s"
