A: I always have the hardest time rating "appearance" of porters; they’re ALL inky black or very dark brown, and all feature very little tan/beige head. This one’s the same, very little lacing. That is to say though, that it looks good.
S: Smells delicious, all toasted, nutty caramels and burnt dark fruit scents (like berry jam on burnt toast).
T/M: A well-crafted beer, for certain. The hop bitterness is where you want it (at the finish), and the distinct roasted malts are all up front, developing with each sip. Mouthfeel is slightly disappointed, as its thinner than I’d like, but still, a well-balanced ale.
D: I could definitely session with this brew, the ABV is reasonable (5.6%) and its plenty tasty enough to warrant 2nd and even 3rd or 4th visits in a single night. Good beer. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 12, 2007 12 0z Bottle via RB Secret Santa (thanks lou18!). Pours almost black with a tiny beige head. Nose is subtle with some mild roastiness and some fruity esters. Taste is roasty, with some mild sweet chocolate, possibly some oats, and some floral hops in the end as well. Also a tiny bit of vinousness likely from oxidation. The aftertaste is quite a of hops and roasted barley. Moderate carbonation and light/medium body. This is just a little bit above an average porter.

Smells of burnt coffee, had this side by side with the SUmmit Porter, and they were very similar tasting, with the smells being a bit differnt. Im on a Porter kick right now so this fit right in. Very dark, with almost no head. Not as coffe tasting as i like but still quite good BeerBelcher (945), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 28, 2007 I had this on-site at the Tyranena brewery, and was not terribly impressed with it. It seemed not quite "charred" or "burned pizza crust" for me, and had a watery mouthfeel.
The beer was served in a UK-pint glass, and did not appear to be tremendously thick nor block-out-the-sun opaque. It had a small amount of white head.
Aroma was very faint for a porter, and was of toasted malt.
Flavor was not as chocolatey or coffee-ish as most other porters I’ve had recently. Instead, it was a fairly weak-tasting caramel malt character.
Mouthfeel seemed a bit watery for this style.
I wouldn’t recommend against it, but I don’t feel this is one of the better porters I’ve had lately.
