Smell: A fine, earthy aroma displaying an array of notes: roasted malts, smoke, black licorice, bittersweet chocolate, and herbs.
Taste: Dark roasted maltiness leads to a mild sweetness and a decidedly chocolatey mocha-like flavor. Pinch of anise. Herbal hop flavor with an earthy, spicy bitterness. Lightly roasty finish with a further hint or two of chocolate.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: It’s definitely tasty. BlackHawk carries us all down a Trail of Beers to a really wonderful place. esjaygee (1519), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 29, 2008 12oz bottle, courtesy of a trade from a while ago. Thanks! Pours a dark, cola-brown color; huge, textured light-beige head with great retention and fine-bubbled lacing; very nice pour. Bittersweet chocolate, roasted malts, and a zesty lemon peel note in the aroma; pleasant and balanced. Medium mouthfeel, showing lots of milk and dark chocolate, roasted malts (without lending any charred or overly burnt character); plenty of bittersweet chocolate; toasty breadiness / toasted malts at the core. A very tasty, sessionable porter. Medium finish, showing plenty of doughiness, roasted malts, and lingering bittersweet chocolate; dry and bittersweet end.
