Pours deep black with a nice light-tan head. Roasty nose with some berries in the background. Straightforward flavor, not over-roasted, mild blackberry, gently sweet, pretty aggressive carbonation making it not quite quaffable. Pretty nice beer.
37steel (186), St. Charles, Illinois, USA Aug 28, 2008 12 oz bottle. Dark brown almost black with a thick tan head. Roasty, toasty aromas. Lots of chocolate in the flavor with a biscuty edge to it. Very solid beer. Quite enjoyable. MartiniFiend (84), Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, USA Aug 27, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with no head. Sweet malt aroma. Medium palate. Flavor is a malt start with a sweet middle and a bitter finish. noncaloric (19), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Aug 17, 2008 Updated: Aug 25, 2008Bottle, pint glass. Pours black, nearly opaque, with red highlights where thin. An exuberant release of carbonation leaves a thick tan head, which does eventually dissipate, but with significant lacing. Aroma of grassy hops, with some toasty notes in the background. Initial mouthfeel is surprisingly watery for a beer with this much head, though it does become creamy after a second or two of savoring. Flavor is sharply bitter, with malt, cola, and chocolate undertones. A lot of flavor here, but not all of it is pleasant. Hop heads will rate it higher than I. The bitter notes last longer, finishing like tonic water. GJF (218), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA Jul 25, 2008 This is a solid porter with lots of roast malt from start to end. A little light in body, but the flavor is packed. CaryTheDude (163), Ripon, Wisconsin, USA Jun 24, 2008 In the words of Borat, very nice. Tobacco and coffee are such a fine combination, and they’re excellent in this porter. A little watery, but no real complaints. Could drink this one all day.
