zeke626 (221), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jun 8, 2008 Thanks to akevitt for sharing. Bottle. Pours a black body with red hues and a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, cocoa, and coffee. Medium-bodied with a slightly watery mouthfeel. Flavors of roasted malts and bitter coffee. Finish is clean with a bitter coffee taste.
BrotherGrendel (186), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Oct 4, 2008 Aroma- Moderate roasted malts ranging from coffee, chocolate, to caramel, low grassy aroma, bitter tones, no esters, no diacetyl.
Appearance- Deep dense brown hue with dark ruby highlights, good clarity in the light, small off-white head dissipates to a thin ring.
Flavors- Roasty coffee malts dominate with a backing of bittersweet chocolate, low-medium hop bitterness with grassy tones, no diacetyl, no esters, finishes with light dryness and sweetness.
Mouthfeel- Medium body, moderate carbonation, smooth texture.
Overall- A straight-forward roasted malt porter with a nice balance of sweet chocolate and bitter coffee tones balanced by subtle hops, no major flaws but this beer has no true standout qualities from other porters, good example of the style. FunkyBrewster (151), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 2, 2008 Pours a dark brown nearly black with a small tan frothy head. Aroma is very sweet with a strong roasted malt and sharp chocolate presence. Flavor starts out with a very pleasant sweet chocolate toast sort of flavor, like a chocolate cereal. Some nice bitterness appears in the finish and lingers for a while. Medium- full body and med-high carbonation. Good porter, very good balance of sweet and bitter. 37steel (186), St. Charles, Illinois, USA Aug 28, 2008 12 oz bottle. Dark brown almost black with a thick tan head. Roasty, toasty aromas. Lots of chocolate in the flavor with a biscuty edge to it. Very solid beer. Quite enjoyable. MartiniFiend (104), Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, USA Aug 27, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with no head. Sweet malt aroma. Medium palate. Flavor is a malt start with a sweet middle and a bitter finish. noncaloric (112), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Aug 17, 2008 Updated: Aug 25, 2008Bottle, pint glass. Pours black, nearly opaque, with red highlights where thin. An exuberant release of carbonation leaves a thick tan head, which does eventually dissipate, but with significant lacing. Aroma of grassy hops, with some toasty notes in the background. Initial mouthfeel is surprisingly watery for a beer with this much head, though it does become creamy after a second or two of savoring. Flavor is sharply bitter, with malt, cola, and chocolate undertones. A lot of flavor here, but not all of it is pleasant. Hop heads will rate it higher than I. The bitter notes last longer, finishing like tonic water.
