Dark, dark brown. The aroma is straight coffee with only a bit of the bourbony, oaky smells coming through. Smooth as silk. I really enjoyed this one.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Jun 2, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Aroma of bourbon followed quickly by sweet coffee and mocha. Smells like actual coffee beans, not the coffee-esque smell typical of porters and stouts. Vanilla scent as well (likely from the oak). The aroma is strong, and, unlike the smell of coffee itself, it isn’t disgusting, but I’m not much of a fan of coffee odors in general. Pours a dark brown, almost a rich, dark amber, with a dark copper hue. Moderate amount of sable-colored head. Produces good lacing. Coffee and bourbon dominate the flavor. The taste is surprisingly sweet and sugary. Reminds me of coffee with hazelnut and grenadine added. Lemon and orange in the finish. The flavors are strong but not particularly complex. Coffee aftertaste, Medium to heavy body. Oily in the palate. At first, I found this beer surprisingly easy to drink, but it became a challenge upon multiple sips. Devil Over a Barrel is a pleasant enough brew, but it’s just not my kind of beer. Coffee beans simply don’t belong near human palates. The bourbon enhances this beer, but the coffee drags it down. dchmela (1440), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 2, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a blackish red with a thin tan head. Big coffee, chocolate malt, oatmeal aroma. Just silky smooth. Body is slightly thin, but very much a porter. Taste is dry coffee and oatmeal, very smooth. Not a lot of the barrel, but enough to smooth things out and make this a very delicious beer. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA

Thick dense dark brown black with a super tan creamy milk chocolate head. Smell is chocolate, caramel, raisins, fig, and earthy with a very small splash of bourbon. Flavor is nice roasted walnuts with no real bourbon and some chocolate. Very nice creamy thick (yet not syrupy) palate. Mild and drinkable overall. illinismitty (1797), Nashville, Tennessee, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 2, 2008 Bottle at Noogfest 08. Pours deep brown with a tan head. Aroma of wet coffee grounds. Medium to full bodied with a slick texture. Very well balanced flavors of coffee, chocolate, oats, and nuts. The finish is slightly dry and woody, but not over done. Very nice use of the barrel here as not to destroy or over power the beer. PhillyBeer2112 (2088), Orange Park, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 1, 2008 Throwdown. Very dark brown. Lots of coffee here. Pretty much iced coffee in many ways. Thinned out body. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | May 31, 2008 Bottle. Cold extract coffee, dark chocolate, dry roast, vanilla & oak in the aroma. The flavor yields a somewhat distracting coffee in front of a very nice bourbon/porter blend. A hint of green pepper alcohol crops in in the finish but the beer leaves you with roasty oak notes. Great mouthfeel. Overall this is a very good barrel aged beer with a strong but not tasty coffee element.
