RCL (1020), Boston, Massachusetts, USA Jul 1, 2008 Great rye and bourbon aroma. Dark brown, nearly black pour. Flavor leans towards lightly sweet. Lighter rye spiciness. Seems to be just the right amount of oak, wouldn’t want anymore or it could get too astringent. Gimme a sponge bath in this! I would like to smell like it all day long.
yngwie (3529), Kristiansand, Norway Sep 5, 2008 Bottle, shared by papsoe. A clear, dark brown pour leaves a small beige head. Mocha, chocolate, dried fruits, some vanilla and spirits and a little note of oxidation in the aroma. The flavor is on the mocha and chocolate side, with some oxidation and alcohol. Is there a touch of dms too? Medium body and a coffee-bitter finish. A quite nice one, and sure not a dirty old beer. (080822) yespr (6391), Copenhagen O, Denmark Aug 24, 2008 12 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a small orange glare and a fully gone head. Whisky like and roasted malty aroma. Flavour is sweet malty with a smooth chocolate base. Slight alcohol burn out of the roasted malt and chocolate flavours. Smooth yet warming but not without some edge to it. sneagrams3 (1402), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Aug 22, 2008 The Dan Journal #228. Tasted 8/20/08. 12oz bottle. Pitch and dark hued. Bubbled head. Cocoa woody nose. Bitter with a whiskey burn. Touch vanilla and peppery. Full bodied and slick. Tasty and bitter. Dry finish blended with the woody malty character. This is a damn fine porter! fiver29 (305), Strongsville, Ohio, USA Aug 20, 2008 Bottle pours pitch black with a thin off white head. Has a slight aroma that consists of slight bourbon, chocolate, and vanilla. Has a medium to heavy body. Taste is very nice. Has a creaminess with bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, and finishes smooth with all of these flavors on the back side. This is a solid brew. valpoaj (290), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA Aug 17, 2008 Pours a deep chocolate with a good one finger tan head that settles quickly but leaves a nice film. Aroma is heavy on rye, roasted malts, and some coffee accents...very pleasant overall. Flavor is, well, surprisingly good. Lots of rye flavors, with heavy doses of milky chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and a bit of a spice note as well. Palate is very good...not too heavy, but has a very smooth mouthfeel. This was a very nice porter for the summer months, and the aging in the rye whiskey barrels gave it a great extra dimension without overwhelming the beer...probably my favorite from Tyranena to date.
