Pours a nice dark black that allows some light in the pour but sits black in the glass. Two finger creamy tan head. The nose is a little subdued, coffee, chocolate, some light whiskey, sour rye. Roasty flavor, lots of coffee, the whiskey is actually very well balanced, the sourness of the whiskey goes well with the spicy rye, alcohol is there in good proportions. Nice velvety thick mouthfeel. Finishes roasty and warm with some whiskey. Very nice base porter here, which is what carries this brew. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 25, 2008 The color was dark chocolate black/brown. The head was very thin, creamy, and medium beige. The aroma was that of an imperial coffee stout. There were chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and molasses notes. The flavor was coffee, choclate, molasses, and some hops. The palate was medium bodied. The finish was roasty and warm. zeke626 (302), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 25, 2008 Bottle, pours an opaque, dark brown body with red hues and a thin brown head. Chocolate milkshake aroma at first blush, but there are also scents of cocoa, coffee, and dark fruit. Thick, smooth, viscous mouthfeel. Flavors of toasted malts, cocoa, and coffee, with hints of whiskey, vanilla, and toffee. Slightly dry and bitter cocoa finish. Whiskey aroma and flavors start to come out a little more as the beer warms. GAManiac (1177), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 24, 2008 Updated: Jan 30, 2009Pours dark brown, almost black, with ruby hints when held up to light. Nearly non-existent head which builds only a slight swirl hanging around throughout leaving moderate lacing. Big aroma of roasted coffee and dark chocolate with hints of the wood in there. Some other sweet dark fruits and vanilla also show up in the nose along with dark malts. Roasted malts hit up front on the taste followed closely by roasted coffee and chocolate. Interestingly, I can detect the rye in the taste balanced with the thick sweetness of the caramel and vanilla. To say the mouthfeel is thick would be an understatement as this one is smooth and viscous throughout. Very little carbonation as far as I could tell. This is definitely a sipper - big, thick and syrupy but with a great taste. It’s a little to syrupy to top my list of porters, but it’s nice.
Edit: Tried this one again after a few months and was much more impressed. Score reflects the recent tasting. Tmoney99 (4763), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Pours clear dark brown color with a moderater frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Heavy toasted dark chocolate, woody and bourbon aroma. Medium to full body with a thick smooth texture. Heavy bourbon & wood bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of long duration. This is a standout porter. puzzl (2635), New York, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 12/20 | May 21, 2008 Bottle from multiple people. Quite an interesting beer. Not the overwhelming whiskey bomb I was expecting. And, looking at the description, they actually blended the beer out the barrel (gasp!), so good on them. Indeed, the whiskey flavors are subtle but pleasant, although I’d never be able to guess it was rye whiskey barrels that were used despite being an avid rye whiskey fan. The mouthfeel on this is fantastic, thick as molasses and very smooth going down, while still keeping its character overall very toned down. The mouthfeel of Expedition with the nuance of a good session beer.
That all sounds fantastic, of course, but in reality this beer isn’t really that amazing. It is very well crafted though and an enjoyable drinking experience. Definitely not an ager though. I bet this beer is better without the aging in rye barrels. after4ever (2776), Brier, Washington, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | May 21, 2008 12-oz. Pours black, not quite opaque. Burnt tan head. Mild rye peeks through on the nose. Rich and creamy body but this beer is up against a bunch of ridiculous impies tonight so it actually drinks like a model of restraint and decorum. Chocolate and roast join the rye on the mid-palate. It’s an interesting, flavorful, balanced and harmonious beer that, as a bonus, packs a big unusual flavor profile. Nicely done. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 21, 2008 Roasted tar aroma, with a hint of light smokiness and a very present bit of rye whiskey and bread. This is really tasty stuff, smoky vanilla notes, with some woody whiskey barrel nuances. Malt background is bready and some what sweet like honey, but bone dry in the finish with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. Not amazingly complex, as I have never sought to achieve greatness from a porter, but this is extremely well made, but without the barrel aging this would be really tame. Still I am glad to have finally gotten to try some Tyranena brews! Thanks JBuzz!
