Smells of sweet caramel, whickey, and sweet malts. The flavor is pretty heavy on the whiskey as most barrel aged brews are. The sweet dark fruits and caramel malts take a backseat mostly. Lightly bitter finish and lingering aftertaste. Pretty balanced for a barrel aged brew, just not a whole lot of multidude of flavors. Still drinks really nice. Dark pour with decent head. Chocolate and spicy rye aromas. Some toffee and molasses. Prunes too. Flavor was similar with a nice Mocha flavor with toned down spices. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 2, 2008 Bottle… GIABMISGFAB … This beer rocks!… Clear, dark mahogany ale with a small, creamy, beige head. The aroma is a succulent marriage of milk chocolate, malted rye and rye whiskey with subtle oak. Medium to full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and passable carbonation. Rich, velvety-smooth, chocolate and grain finish... dries out in the end. I’ve been awaiting a rye barrel aged beer for quite some time and I finally found my man… and he is dirty... and he is old. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 1, 2008 12oz bottle from discount liquor in Milwaukee. Dirty dark, dark brown with medium tan head. Aroma is prominent whiskey vanilla though not overbearing alc, dark medium sweet roast, cinnamon spice, a little winey, dark fruit, nice. Coffee is surprising prominent first flavor though secondary flavor is all barrel though not in an unbalanced sort of way, also smoked and roasted malt, slight sweet plum, a little nuttiness and chocolate, very nice. Full, creamy body with that interesting chunky body that I love, though not as chunky as ’07 DL or Impy Cane and Ebel. This is an interesting and complex beer, I’m really loving on it. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 1, 2008 Large chocolatey taste, with some vanilla and cashew. A little bit of whiskey, but the whole alcohol and rye tastes I was expecting are very subdued. Smooth body, very drinkable. Overall great. dchmela (1458), Orlando, Florida, USA

Pours thick and brownish black with little head. Whiskey, merlot, vanilla, slightly sweet aroma. Thick chocolaty roasted grain taste. Finishes thick and chocolaty.
Rerate, this time with a full bottle to ponder. Dark reddish black pour with a thick tan head. Whiskey barrel aroma with a hint of vanilla. Taste is vanilla, roasted grain, sweet malt, whiskey. Finishes a little sweet with a touch of vanilla. Just a really nice well balanced specialty brew. gunhaver (1043), Tampa, Florida, USA

Brownish pour, with orange highlights. Creamy lacing, with a frothy head. Notes of chocolate and caramel in the nose. Roasted notes in the mouth, with chocolate and some big vanilla influence. No rye at all? Easy to drink, but doesn’t really deliver on the all rye build-up. Bland overall.
