Warm from the barrel. Nice. Pours a mid-brown with a ruby fringe and a milky foam in tan. Flavor is rich. Sweet, juicy caramels flow over spicy, earthen bread. Barrel character lends a real affluent depth to the porter. Brown and roast flavors lie tangled beneath the barrel and the spice. Not unbalanced. Lightly sweet. A nip warm. I really like the blend level. I think as a solely barreled beer this would be overwhelming and as a straight porter, a touch bland. But together, these two really make a nice beer. If anything, there could be more creaminess or rich fruitness. I do not appreciate the glassy, clear filtered quality of this brew. It detracts from a rounded softness that the yeast would bring. Otherwise, tasty. Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

Small tan head with notes of light rye, wood, caramel, and roasted malt flowing from the glass. This was the last beer I drank out my Stone Old Guardian glass, as my son promptly broke it by slaming the dishwasher door. Anyway, the body was firm but oily, and very creamy on the palate. The flavor was just like the aroma, which show more whiskey as it warms. Good stuff here. toncatcher (228), Santee - SAN DIEGO, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 28, 2008 Received as an extra from Thecheeseman, thanks. Pours much darker then I thought with a thin brown head. Aroma of rye, peat, roastiness, and hints of whiskey. Flavors of rye, and whiskey, with some roasted malt and alcohol. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 27, 2008 On tap, this is a creamy dark beer with huge brown head. Rye clearly cuts through the bourbon aspect of the barrels in both the aroma and flavor. Bottles were somewhat less interesting with subdued rye. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA

Pours dark black with a big lasting creamy, light brown head. Smell is rich, roasty and malty with light creamy coffee notes and a hint of whickey. Just a fantastic smell on this. Taste is really smooth, dark roasty and creamy with a nice light whiskey influence that doesn’t overpower at all, or let off any harsh alcohol. A hint of bitterness, and a fairly quick finish. Could be a tad more full flavored, and perhaps the rye is keeping it from being too rich. Still a fantastic beer! xmarcnolanx (798), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA

Aroma is dark fruit, touches of metal, chocolate, coffee.
Damn, initially rye, dark malt, more rye and bourbon, chocolate. This is really freaking good and complex.
Palate is creamy, dense, slightly fizzy.
Jesus, great!
I think the aroma is lacking in this, but otherwise, this is a world-class beer.
Still waiting for it to warm a little. goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 22, 2008 Poured a clear deep ruby-brown color with a tan head. Semi-sweet chocolate aroma with roasted malt and mild coffee. Smooth whiskey and a touch of ash. Sweet roasted malt with some whiskey. Medium to full body with a creamy mouthfeel. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 22, 2008 12 oz bottle. Poured an opaque black color. Pretty thick. Slid into the glass. Head was two fingers high with good retention; tight bubbles with a light brown orange color and an orange-ish tint. Some lace was left behind at the end. The aroma was of chocolate and brown sugar mostly. Some fig and toffee also came out as it warmed up a bit. I didn’t really detect much in the way of whiskey. Thick, creamy, full-bodied mouth feel. Very nice. Delicately sweet up front with some roasty bitterness at the end accompanied by a splash of alcohol warmth. The flavor palate included vanilla, molasses, toffee, milk chocolate, and subdued coffee elements. The whiskey flavor imparted by the barrel aging was subtle. Good beer.
