Light caramel brown body with a smaller off white, almost light brown head. Only about 1 finger thick, and has no real retention. Some sporadic lacing though. Nose is immediately boozy, bourbon, whiskey, some woody or earthy notes from the barrel, and not much else. There is a sweetness here, but it’s hard to tell the source. It makes it hard to call this one a brown ale by the nose, because so many of the normal brown ale aromas are covered up by the barrel aging. Fore is heavily astringent, then tons of bourbon inspired notes, some malty sweetness, and some earthiness. Back end brings a wateriness to everything that is pretty off putting. This is like drinking a too sweet glass of bourbon or whiskey that has been diluted far too much by tap water. Medium bodied, slightly creamy mouthfeel but the watery notes are still present. Finish is lengthy, boozy, sickly sweet and then at the very end once again watered down. A pretty big disappointment, since I have had some phenomenal stuff from this brewery. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 19, 2008 Updated: Apr 11, 2008Bottle pours dark brown with red highlights getting through. There does not seem to be much of a head, but there is a bit of surface haze and a surfiace ring. The aroma is caramel, bready malt, alcohol, and perhaps bourbon. The flavor is sweet, malty, alcohol not well hidden, bourbon, vanilla, and bread. The palate is medium to thin. This is pretty inoffensive, not a bad beer, but I’ve had much better from these guys. Update - I bought another 6 on 4/11/2008 and like it much more so. It seems to have lost some of the over the top bourbon and has become a much more pleasant Brown. Mild berries and bourbon to the aroma. Thin in body with a nice bourbon finish. Good lacing. Medium hoppiness. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 3, 2008 Bottle courtesy of vikingbeau. Faint aroma; no bourbon barrel aged aspect detectable. Somewhat sweet. Clear dark red. No visible carbonation. Small, off white head. Sweet. Not much in the way of bourbon barrel aspect. Kind of like Winter’s bourbon, but better. Not bad, but not really bourbon aged? Really? CharlesDarwin (1849), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 14, 2008 12oz Bottle. Caramel and alcohol nose. Boozy. Pretty quiet and restrained, but warm and enjoyable. Comes in a ochre-tinted shade of Mollisol with some medium translucency and rim of real soapy hickory heartwood. Flavor is real rich and intense, there’s some heavy butterscotch and caramel sauces up front, but not marred with diacetyl (not that I would know). Otherwise, a great malt build and blend back with the barrel portion. Warmth and vanilla, but balanced. Toasted caramels, sharp Maillard acidity, and reduced fruits. Still, a bit light and airy, although there’s a portion of sugar that lies on the tongue with some resistance. Carbonation carries some esters across the grain fields, highlighting the sugar play. Hops stay a quiet murmur in the reeds, but dart out towards the dusk to nap a bit of limelight. Probably as nice a straight brown ale (okay, there is some barrel in there) as someone could ask for. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 10, 2008 For a beer that is partially aged in bourbon barrels, this beer is quite gentle and mild, but I like this approachability...I thought it to be pretty good.
Appearance was pretty typical for a brown ale. It was a red-brown color that was clear, and pretty foamy. Aroma was crisp and slightly sweet and caramel-y. Flavor was a bit metallic but also roasty caramel. Mouthfeel was crisp and clean that’s a bit thin but not inconsistent with other good brown ales. Very drinkable for a barrel aged beer.
I’d recommend this beer. troyc (1175), Lubbock, Texas, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 25, 2007 (Bottle) Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate, with some bourbon notes as well. Burnt caramel and toffee notes in the flavor. The taste includes quite a bit of bourbon, especially in the aftertaste. Seems like there is more alcohol than there really is. Good mouthfeel, with low carbonation. An interesting and enjoyable beer!
