| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 5, 2007 Bottle and served in a standard pint glass: A muddy medium brown hue with coppery highlights topped by a small but lasting creamy off-white head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of pumpernickel bread, blueberry honey, caramel apples, hint of molasses, a flash of peat moss and a beautiful earthen yeast ester. Sure it smells sweet but that is the point and IMO is very inviting. The taste starts fruity sweet with homage to liquorice based drinks with it’s twang along the edges. I also get some prune and fig flavor upon further review. The finish is more in line with the pumpernickel bread I found on the nose. The after taste is surprising mouth watering due to the fruity twang (not lactic nor acidic but something else). The mouth feel is a bit loose but within the style without becoming sticky or cloy.
A far more enjoyable beer than I would have imagined. More people need to rate this, especially those whom like a good winter bock. Among the best of the style brewed in America. ( I am shocked at JPDipso rating but that was years ago so a pass is in order) chimpscampee (556), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 27, 2007 Sweetness (honey, carmel, molasses, botterscotch?) is hard to identify but is not overbearing like some doppelbocks, which usually seem bland to me. Their is also some fruits, sourness, and dry hops to balance out the malt. Carbonation and most everything seem about right. Light to medium body. sliffy (2012), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 11, 2007 Bottle thanks to drewbeerme: Copper color with a light tan head. Aroma, caramel, molassas, some dark fruits. Flavor, roasty malts, caramel, some chocolate, and fruits. Not too bad at all. I enjoyed it. JCB (1768), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 9, 2007 12 oz bottle acquired via trade with drewbeerme - thanks! I’ve never been a huge fan of the style but this one is pretty solid. Deep amber to brown color, not too lively in body (minimal head). But there are some sweet flavors, with bready malt, some chocolate, a tad of butterscotch if my taste buds don’t fail me. There are certainly better examples of the style, but this one’s solid. holdenn (1443), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 9, 2007 12 oz bottle thanks to drewbeerme, red brown in color, with yeasty, burnt roast and chocolate aromas. Sweet clean lager with bakers chocolate, a light bitterness, and a sweet finish. Lighter in color, body, and flavor than most doppelbocks, but still tasty overall. drewbeerme (2282), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Dec 27, 2006 12oz bottle, a months old. first off, a 6.4% doppelbock is weak. pours a clear mohagony with little head. aroma is kinda sickening, filled with honey, molasses, and vanilla. flavor is too sweet, syrupy, big malt flavor, with hints of honey and molasses. not blended in a very enjoyable way, a little too over the top for a beer that’s 6.8%. this beer doesn’t finish dry like other doppelbocks.
