The bottle I had was not as mature as I would have cared for. Overall a malty whallop and nicely balanced with hops. If you can make it to the brewery tasting room, you MUST try the Wee Heavy Scotch Ale-one word is Remarkable !!!! joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA

Super deep rich sweet nose with hints of smoke. Kinda light mouthfeel, with a great sourdough like sweet edged flavor. Very nice and unique. NeonLX (258), Wisconsin, USA

Appearance is dark reddish-brown with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Taste is heavy on the malt side with some nice caramel overtones. A welcome hint of bitterness to balance things out. There’s lots of depth to this brew taste-wise. Still one of my favorites. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 5, 2007 Bottle and served in a standard pint glass: A muddy medium brown hue with coppery highlights topped by a small but lasting creamy off-white head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of pumpernickel bread, blueberry honey, caramel apples, hint of molasses, a flash of peat moss and a beautiful earthen yeast ester. Sure it smells sweet but that is the point and IMO is very inviting. The taste starts fruity sweet with homage to liquorice based drinks with it’s twang along the edges. I also get some prune and fig flavor upon further review. The finish is more in line with the pumpernickel bread I found on the nose. The after taste is surprising mouth watering due to the fruity twang (not lactic nor acidic but something else). The mouth feel is a bit loose but within the style without becoming sticky or cloy.
A far more enjoyable beer than I would have imagined. More people need to rate this, especially those whom like a good winter bock. Among the best of the style brewed in America. ( I am shocked at JPDipso rating but that was years ago so a pass is in order) beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 27, 2004 Clear light cherrywood color, waffer thin light tan head emerged briefly from a vigoruos pour, some spotty globs of lace stick. Aroma is soft on the nose with a malty low toned sweetness of dulled raisin, bruised apple, unripe mango, and mild cherry with a caramel undertone within each wiff. Some slight toastyness derives as it warms. The taste follows suit with a good portion of malts rendering some low and mild toned sweetness of dulled fruitiness, I get mostly raisin, but its very mild, notes of bruised apple and slight cherry notes add in some other fruitish notions. There's a bit of caramel coming through at the start, midway begins to turn to a more toasty faction and finishes with a bit of dryness and very slight burntness. Feel is medium bodied with a bit of an uneasy texture that doesn't fit the style very well which comes out with some of the toasty character midway to finish. Not a bad drinkin' beer at all, as a dopplebock it lacks some depth and flavorness along with a creamier body and feel. Seemed like a nice malty Octoberfest to me, still liked it though. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 12, 2007 Cloudy brown color with a thin tan head. Doughy malt aroma. Taste is very sweet malt up front reminiscent of dark fruit rolled in brown sugar. Slightly acidic finish with a lingering bread dough aftertaste and a nice medium body. A very good doppelbock.
