Nose is richly fruity and full of caramel malts. A little alcohol noted. Flavor is sweet at first, than a little citrus and tropical fruits, finishing with a sweet alcoholic bite. Enjoyed this much more as it warmed. Paired surprisingly nicely with some panko onion rings. sliffy (2012), Columbus, Ohio, USA

This one is more viscous than most. The aroma is highly malty with some fruitiness present as well. The flavor contains caramel malts and again some fruit. As this warms the alcohol which was hidden starts to appear. There is also a smoked sensation. yespr (12190), Copenhagen O, Denmark

Pours a dirty amber color with a thin off-white head that fades quickly, leaving an abundance of sticky lacing. Aroma is dark fruit, caramel, with hints of grapefruit and hops. Not as rich and chewy like many BWs, but also nice very bright or hoppy. I believe this bottle has been aged for at least a year so maybe some of the harshness has subsided. Some toffee, sweet malts, and a bit of hops in the flavor. Pretty balanced but nothing comes out to overly excite me. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 3, 2007 5/09/2007: I have been craving a barleywine for awhile now, so I’m expecially looking forward to trying this one... Tyranena Spank Me Baby! Barley Wine pours an opaque pecan/amber color with a thin, slowly churning crown that is dark beige in color. The beer itself looks pretty thick and has a moderate level of carbonation. Tons of malt errupts from the flavor with highlights of berries and caramel apples. The flavor starts a bit sweet with deep, instense caramel malts. Some fruitiness begins part way through the flavor and continues through the finish. This beer is pretty strong, but there is just enough bitterness to balance this beer out. There is also a hint of oxidation (which is not a bad thing in this particular beer). The alcohol in this brew is probably pretty high, but it is well disguised and only shows in the warming finish. After this beer gets a little warmer, hints of chocolate become apparent in the flavor as well as a tinge of some smoke toward the finish. A similar floral/numbing hop flavor and bitterness similar to what is found in the Tyranena IPAs also begins to show up in the finish when this beer gets warmer. The body of this beer is medium-full and slightly sticky. This barleywine is not overly sweet and is well-balanced overall. I found Spank Me Baby! to be a good sipping barleywine.
12 oz bottle from buckybeer via trade (Dec 2006). Thanks Mark!
