Feb 18, 2009 2007 bottle acquired in trade and consumed in January of 2009. Pours a muddy brown. Aroma is very mild. A touch of malt and alcohol. Flavor is a little odd, the lack of a noticeable hop presence leaves this beer seriously wanting for depth of character. Perhaps too old?

Jan 7, 2009 bottle at Paul’s BW tasting. Deep amber in color. Aroma of molasses, some rubbery phenolics and light esters. Taste is molasses, a bit estery, some green apple. Tastes like the yeast got stressed. Medium body. Body could have used more heft.

Dec 22, 2008 Slightly caramel aroma, with hints of dark fruits, alcohol, and a touch of something astringent. Pours a hazy, reddish-brown, with just a dusting of tan head. The flavor has oak, vanilla, and just a touch of hop bitterness. Solid beer, nothing out of the ordinary, but very drinkable.

Dec 19, 2008 Courtesy of Ed. Aged... 2 years? Dark copper color with no head. Strong malty aroma and a little oak. Thick and chewy malt body. Light molasses, some brown sugar and sherry notes. Yummy!

Dec 14, 2008 [Bottle] Pours a cloudy ruby brown with a small beige head that gradually dissipates. Aroma is slightly subdued, but has a bit of citric hops, plenty of caramel and a hint of the alcohol. Flavor is interesting. Actually a little smoky like toasted wood. Was not expecting that one. There is also some candi sugar, a touch of raisin and caramel, and more of that alcohol. This is one of the more unusual barleywines that I have had in a while.

Dec 7, 2008 Tyranena spank me baby as Spank Me Baby Barley Wine with wood. Amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, light fruit and mild sugar. Taste of alcohol, hops, caramel, raisons, sugar, molasses and mild wood. Smooth body with some alcohol burn and warming effects.

Nov 30, 2008 12 oz bottle. I could have sworn I liked this beer when I had it over a year ago. This one was aged since early 07. Pours an ok medium coppery brown with an ok fizzy head. Aroma is wierd though- tons of rubber, plastic phenols, along with a good amoutn of acetaldehydes, green apple, and some pear to go along with a lame and weak caramel malt backbone. Flavor is a bit more green apple, phenolics, ok toasted and caramelt malts, ligth pear and raisin fruitiness, a bit estery and solvent-like in the finish- and a bit thin. One of my least favorites of the night.

Nov 30, 2008 Bottle at Paul’s Gathering: Murky deep copper pour topped by a dense tan head. Sweet aroma- dark caramel, old plums/prunes, honey and a touch of toasted vanilla. Rich palate. Sweet but isn’t cloying. The flavor has some honey and toasted vanilla over ripe dark fruits- plummy notes and a touch of gingerbread. There’s a smoky hint in there as well. Finish has a smooth long mild bitterness with residual earthy notes and smoky hints. Big, but gentle drinking.
