Bottle with a big thanks to mcbackus- thanks Matt! Pours a murky pond water brown with practically no head. Aroma is toffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, dark fruits, rum cake, cherry, sherry. Flavor is toffee, bread, sherry, earth, and booze. mouthfeel is oily and sticky with low carbonation. A big tasty beer. Aroma is pretty nice. Tastes a little too sweet and boozy though. a sipper fo sho.

Bottle at Captain Lawrence courtesy of Greg during the release of Smoke from the Oak Apple Brandy Barrel. Pours a ruby brown with a thin beige head. Plum, prune, vanilla, and a light isopropyl note. Flavors are somewhat akin to decomposing fruit – plum and prunes. Light dry finish. Ok, but not amazing.

2006 Bottle. Hazy dark brown/orange colored pour with little carbonation and a nice spicy boozy aroma. Flavor was rich creamy and malty and finished with a little pear and brown sugar on the aftertaste. Ageing has definitely done this bottle some good, as it was very drinkable with none of the alcohol heat of a young barleywine.

The Dan Journal #264. tasted 6/8/09. 12oz bottle. Hazy and murky hue. Bready and bitter rye bread aromas. Full bodied with a soft palate. Nice caramel malt character with a noticeable alcohol burn. Nice bitter finish. This is really nice. Creamy vanilla malts mixed with the bitter and tangy hop finish. Good stuff!

This brew pours a cloudy ruby brown color with a medium and fluffy beige head that recedes slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Sugary malt aroma with notes of smoke and vanilla. Medium body with a sweet malt and burnt sugar base and flavors of mild hops, smoke and oak mixed in. The finish is sweet and malty with a charred wood and caramel aftertaste. Interesting Barley Wine overall, yet not as enjoyable as I would have expected from this brewer.

12oz bottle from maximum12 poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy amber with a short-lived cream-colored head that leaves a small collar and no lacing. The aroma is very sweet with lots of caramel malts, toffee and dark fruits, especially figs and raisins. There is also plenty of brown sugar or molasses thrown in and the hops have pretty much faded. The taste is fairly basic for a barleywine with the caramel malts and toffee forming a decent backbone but with not much else going on. There are hints of dark fruit, but not lots. The mouthfeel is fairly thick and viscous for the style with a little soft carbonation. The sweetness just coats the mouth completely. This is a decent barleywine but I think it’s caught somewhere between an English and American barleywine. I don’t think it quite has the big complex sweetness of the English and the hops have faded a bit too much to really be a good example of the American. It’s still a good beer but it may have been a bit better fresh.
