Smell- espresso and chocolate. Yum!
Taste- very coffee forward with dark chocolate riding shotgun. Roast is smoootthh. Gotta be the oatmeal! No cloying or sweetness which is much appreciated. Hops are present but more in the background. The porter is style works well with the coffee - nice change over a big stout. A beer with such strong coffee needs a solid malt base, and this has it. Great drinkability and tasty as all hell. Fastastic brew! BBB63 (4238), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 5, 2007 Bottle from my many friends, I got three over DLD weekend: Pours nearly opaque with a small but lasting frothy ring and some lace. The aroma has notes of coffee, burnt malts, some toasted bread, chocolate, oatmeal, and grassy hops. The taste pretty much follows suit with rich sweet flavors of pumpernickel bread and bittersweet mocha over an espresso and smoked ham. The finish is more smoke and coffee...on and on...leads to a mouth feel that is more akin to porter, thin and watery, not a noticeable amount of oats IMO. Still despite the underwhelming feel this is a great brew where the coffee is in the forefront but allows other flavors and aromas to shine as well. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 2, 2007 dark brown body with small beige head..aroma is huge in roasted malts, namely dark chocolate and bitter coffee...flavor is almost as strong with it massive coffee backbone (dry roasted creamed coffee with touches of toffee and burnt toast)...finishes slightly bitter and dry...very nice..it is very similar to Founders Breakfast Stout, and deserves to be talked about up there with the better coffee brews.. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 1, 2007 Bottle. Deep brown body with slight light penetration, medium dark tan head. Rich aroma of potent coffee beans, roasted malt, and chocolate. Reminds me of Founders Breakfast Stout. The body isn’t quite as rich as that beer, but still offers a surprisingly smooth, coffee-dominated palate replete with roasted malt and a chocolate backbone. Offers some sweetness but on the dry side overall. This beer deserves its high marks. smhncabot (310), Cabot, Arkansas, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Apr 27, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Juelze, thanks again! Dark brown pour with a short tan head. Aroma of pungent coffee, a bit of booze, some dark fruits, dark chocolate and a tinge of raspberry. Strong bitter coffee, roasted malts, a bit of raspberry and dark chocolate as well. Medium bodied...the carbonation is a bit much...bittersweet and roasty throughout with a roasty/dry finish. Pretty good. sliffy (2012), Columbus, Ohio, USA

Aroma, big coffee, and roasted malt notes, some chocolate, and a hint of oats. Flavor, coffee, chocolate, more coffee, some roasted malts, a bit of oats again. medium to thin body. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 24, 2007 12oz bottle, courtesy of Monger. Thanks, James! Pours a dark black center; medium tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Lots of coffee in the aroma (slightly green); dark chocolate and some bitterness. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: loads of slightly-green coffee upfront (as opposed to fully roasted), surrounded by bitter chocolate and some charred / burnt malts; slightly acidic and hints of citrus bitterness. Decent stuff, but I’m not a fan of how the coffee character plays out here. Medium, dark chocolate and coffee finish; ends quite nicely.
