I did not notice much of an aroma a mild hoppiness and mild sweetness that was it. The taste was odd Pepper (like table pepper not hot pepper) Mild malty taste blended rather well. This was a good odd beer. Poperinge (359), Cowtown, Alberta, Canada

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 7, 2007 Deep mahoghany color with a slowly dissolving thin head. Very hoppy flavor hits immediately and is accentuated by roasted malt with a somewhat bitter aftertaste. Although this was a pretty good beer, it didn’t have the distinct appeal of the Uerige Sticke or Doppelsticke...probably won’t seek this one out again in the near future... kwoeltje (1333), Manchester, Missouri, USA

The smell is of yeast, spice, and roast malt. The taste is VERY roasted, caramel, spice, with remote sherry notes. Quite distinct. Anyways, the mouthfeel is silky, smooth and creamy. It is wonderful brew, similar to a doppelbock, but also unlike anything i’ve tasted. I usually come up with one phrase to really describe a beer, and for this one it would be: Roast malt to the extreme! jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 17, 2007 From a embossed, long narrow neck, swing top 11.2 oz. bottle with a bottled on and freshness date on the neck label, sampled a cool cellar temperature in a stange glass.
Poured a lightly hazy, reddish copper with a frothy, foamy white head that slowly settled into a thin sudsy lacing, small amount of ringed sticking.
Aromas of fruity esters, apples and oranges, roasted grains, a subtle toasted nutty, and medicinal herbal at the edges.
Good, steady medium carbonation and a dry, crisp, slightly bitter slick, velvety smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel.
A pleasant roasted malty and bitter taste, sweet, roasted earthy grainy malts, a touch nutty, a light fruitiness, apples, pears, with a subtle citric, leafy, medicinal herbal hoppiness that have a soft, lingering bitterness, and a dry, bitter, earthy grainy finish, the hops wash around the palate in the aftertaste.
An excellent Altbier from one of my favorite German breweries, a tasty and balanced German-style ale.
