| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 7, 2007 Pours a dark rawhide brown with half a thumbnail of tan head. The pour itself is subtle and coagulate like a dense barley wine. Creamy caramel aromas waft straight out of the bottle. Tastes are robust with roasted caramel, wood, big big malts, dark fruits, mild tobacco, and peanut brittle. Lingering alcohol toward the finish. Soft carbonation and full bodied. Flavors are strong up front, but peter out in the finish. I haven’t had too many Altbiers yet, but this had all the qualities of a good barley wine over anything else. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 7, 2007 This was not an altbier if I have anything to do with it. Damn good, but not an altbier. Aroma was decent...dark fruit(?), burnt malt and must. Pour was as beautiful as a beer could get. Deep murky brown with not much movement and a 2 finger tan head. Looked like a river at night time. Taste was very strong and pronounced. Heavy on the malt, very thick mouthfeel (almost like a milkshake) and very alcoholic. Burns the throat at swallow. Some hoppiness in the aftertaste. The commercial description is dead on...does taste like a barleywine. Just older and dirtier. HomeBrewHawk (279), De Soto, Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 5, 2007 11.2 oz brown swing top bottle poured into a shaker pint. Hazy dark copper, appeared to be bottle conditioned. Two fingers of fine white bubbled head.
Lots of malt in the aroma, some noble hops, and a little alcohol.
Deep malty flavor, plenty of sweetness. Caramel/molasses.
Nice dose of hop bitterness to balance it out. Medium to full bodied.
A really unique beer, very drinkable. brewblackhole (1383), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Oct 31, 2007 Hugely disappointing. I can’t believe the beer in this bottle was what was supposed to be in there. Smelled and tasted like a dopplebock that was overhopped and had gotten old. Taste was sweet carmely malt with lots of old rubbery hops. Color was a murky red brown. Their regular altbier is fantastic, this was ugly closey22 (31), Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 25, 2007 11.2oz bottle. Served in Grandpa’s pils glass. Very rich aroma of brown sugar & prunes along with some earthy notes. Very much a dopplebock. Very dark red color, nearly brown with a smallish cream colored head and good clarity. Thick bodied. Taste is dark caramel, mild roast, herbal & earthy hops, plums/prunes, vanilla, and blackstrap molasses. Very smooth, despite the strong flavors. Nice moderately bitter finish with some nice malty flavors, but no real residual sweetness. Easy drinking beer despite being 8.5%. BrianHagmeier (257), Coralville, Iowa, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Oct 23, 2007 Deep dark red/brown with a frothy head with long retention. A moderate aroma of sweet bread and molasses. Holly Crap! Be carful if you gulp when you drink. I don’t think I was ready for that. Bitter at first then finishes sweet and goes down Aunt Jemima. What it lacks in complexity it makes up for in bitter, burnt, syrup, sweet and a lot of it. footy (334), scottsdale, Arizona, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 20, 2007 7/14/05 330ml. side by side with Uerige Alt. Dark brown with small quick dissipating head. Aroma consist of Vanilla malt and alcohol. Palate was a little too viscous and had too much alcohol. I did not think more was better in this case.
