Commercial Description:
Uerige DoppelSticke might just be "Germany's interpretation of a barley-wine", ie a third definition next to England's "malt-driven" idea {such as JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale} and America's "hop-heavy" version {such as Sierra Nevada's BigFoot}. OG - 1085; IBU - 75; Ingredients; Hops:Spalt Spalter, Hallertauer Perle, Spalt Hallertauer; Malts: Pilsner malt, caramel malt, roasted malt

Out of happenstance, or perhaps karmic alignment, I find myself enjoying this beer as my 1700th rating on my 5th anniversary on RateBeer. Not quite a beer a day, but all in all, not a bad showing for my geographical location these days. Alcohol vapors. Rich and malty, with dusty grain and bitter resinous hops note. Has the characteristic Düsseldorfer Alt aroma - kind of earthy with some bit of funk that I can’t put my finger on - mild but it’s there. Nice malt sweetness. Deep amber brown clear with medium off-white foamy lacing head, not quite creamy. Medium-heavy watery body, but there’s a nice softness to it. Medium to light carbonation. Starts with medium-heavy malty sweetness. A bit of raisin and dark brown sugar, caramel. Good alcohol presence with some warming burn on the way down. The finish comes in with a nice bitter quality. Neither fruity or herbal, though there is a bitter nutty dryness to it that cuts the sweet malts and potentially a cloying sweetness that would otherwise persist. There’s a bit of herbal essence in the very end, leaving you with a dry bitterness on the tongue and a bit of sweetness on the sides. Heavy but a nice beer.

Sweet aroma, but the flavor has some solid hop bitterness that doesn’t come through as much on the nose. Velvety mouthfeel is very nice.

Pale amber color, fluffy white head. A bit of a winey scent to it, sweet malts and caramel. This is a tasty beer, tastes like candy. Nice sweet malt, caramel flavors. A little thin on the tongue, but overall very good.

Serving: 11.2 oz flip-top bottle.
Event: Drinks with the team after work.
Location: Winking Lizard Tavern (Crosswoods) in Columbus, Ohio.

Tasting Notes
Aroma: Earthy, aged dark fruits, fermenting apples, some mustiness.
Appearance: Murky brown/amber color with a foamy beige head (good retention). Remaining crown leaves some scant lacing.
Flavor: Caraml and chocolate malt with some fruit (pear and apples) and alcohol. The finish is dry, roasty, and has a lingering bitterness (moderate in strength). There is a warming and burning alchol sensation through the nose, so the 8.5% ABV is obviously there.
Palate: Medium to full body and smooth.
Overall: A solid altbeir with a nice complexity.

Drak opaque reddish brown with medium off-white head. Aroma is rather malty with a slight sour hint. Taste is unusual... rather apparently alcoholic and hoppy in a way I didn’t expect, and this is not a bad thing. $4/11.2oz

95, are you kidding. Malty crap if you as me. The worst part is that it looked good from the start and came in a sweet bottle. Might as well be a malt liquor...PHEW!!!

330ML bottle via Flacoalto (THANKS!). Pours a dark reddish brown with an average sized beige head. Nose is oxidized and a little sour. Tastes like an oxidized barleywine. Lot of malts and hops, some acetone and warm alc bite on the finish. Don’t care too much for this one.
