Commercial Description:
Uerige DoppelSticke might just be "Germany's interpretation of a barley-wine", ie a third definition next to England's "malt-driven" idea {such as JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale} and America's "hop-heavy" version {such as Sierra Nevada's BigFoot}. OG - 1085; IBU - 75; Ingredients; Hops:Spalt Spalter, Hallertauer Perle, Spalt Hallertauer; Malts: Pilsner malt, caramel malt, roasted malt

(33cl swing top bottle) Slightly hazy, chestnut-brown colour with a medium-sized foamy and quite persistent tanned head. Sweet toast-malty aroma with caramel, cinnamon and liquorice-spicy notes, also delicate but aromatic herbal hops and light fruity accents. Dark malt-character, slightly toasted and almost perfectly rounded up with spicy notes (cinnamon, liquorice, cough-syrup) and a delicate, subtle fruitiness; long and lasting initially sweet, later strong bitter hoppy finish. Very aromatic strong “Alt”, which tastes more like a Barley Wine. For me (being beer-socialized in Germany), it definitely lacks session-qualities, hence I prefer the “normal” Sticke (03.01.07).

From a swing top, narrow neck, embossed, uniquely shaped 11.2 oz. bottle with a bottling and freshness date on the neck label, sampled at a cool cellar temperature in a stange glass. Poured a lightly hazy, reddish copper with a frothy, tight bubbly, foamy off-white head that settled slowly into a thin sudsy, fluffy, creamy lacing, small amount of ringed sticking. Aromas of sweet roasted malts, a hint of caramel, a light fig and raisin fruitiness, earthy, herbal, and whiffs of spicy alcohol. Good, even moderate carbonation and a crisp, dryish bitter, slick, chewy, creamy smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel. Barley wine-like taste with a earthy, spicy, herbal hop bitterness, sweet roasted malts with a touch of sugar, a light caramel coffee, a ripe raisin fruitiness, earthy, spicy herbal hops with a nice lingering bitterness, the alcohol has a spicy warmth in the palate, and a dry, bitter, fruity, alcoholic, malty finish. Another excellent Altbier from Uerige, definitely a sipper, but dangerously quaffable, a must try.

Fruity aroma with vanilla, dates, huge pilsy malt, and spicy hops; chewy body enveloping a medicinal, creamy, orange-peel and nut flavor; finishes nicely bitter, tart and flowery. Quite interesting, and very good.

Bottle. Doppel Sticke has a very malty sweet aroma with dried fruits and honey. The color is dark brownish red with an off white head with good lacing. A bitter roasted malt flavor is balanced by a sweet dried fruit accent and mild yeasty cream like notes with a little bit of caramel. A thick and creamy mouthfeel with average carbonation stretches into a bitter sweet aftertaste. Very satisfying.

Bottle. Vanilla/orange fruitcake aroma (initially had a wet wood/cardboard aroma that faded after setting for a few minutes. Yellow-amber color with small but long lasting head. Dried orange malt with strong citric hops finish - not cloying though. A great sipping beer - in a class by itself - a doppel-alt.

Bottle: Pours a deep crimson mahogany color with a nice puffy white head and lots of lacing. The nose is very malty with lots of cherry, alcohol, fig, dark crusty bread and a hefty dose of molasses, honey and plum. The flavor is a bit sweet and chewy, lots of alcohol and a full bodied spicy malt mouthfeel. Bittersweet finish and a pleasing floral tail. Altbier? More like imperial!
