Aroma has a ton of malt fruit and even maple notes that are reminiscent of the new incarnation of Hardy’s Royal Oak Pale Ale. The sweet, burnt caramel aroma also reminds me of Young’s Old Nick with a few years of bottle age. Flavor is very nice. Still almost syrupy on the palate but it is balanced by quite a massive bitterness and roasted malt. The caramel malt flavor has milk overtones to it and there is a lot of fresh, floral, green hop flavor throughout and into the long finish. STEPHENDR (478), California, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 25, 2006 Swing-top from State Line. Aroma is strong, caramel and roast malt with sticky sweetness, hefty dose of hops. Slight doughy/ bready character. Pours a ruby copper with a light brown head, medium-to-strong carbonation. Slightly hazy with lace AND legs. A heavy bitter taste, a real powerhouse, lasting. Some stickiness, a light touch of bock. Great choice for hop lovers. Roast malt and caramel. Coating feel, medium+ body. Sticky bitter finish and a strong dryness from start to finish. Lovely, heavy hoppiness. Noticeably different than the regular Uerige…overall, I’d much rather drink their regular Alt on a regular basis, though this gem isn’t bad for occasional enjoyment. ;) iowaherkeye (1873), Los Angeles, California, USA

Pours a clear brown copper with a two-finger creamy beige head. Aroma is of burnt toffee, raisins, toasty malts, light bitter nuttiness and spice. Taste has lots of bitterness up front, followed by some sweet caramel and raisins, some nuts and toasty malts, into a lingering bitterness. A very light chalkiness like that of a porter in the finish. There is some alcohol presence throughout, though not overbearing at all. Burps kind of grassy. Medium bodied, light-moderate carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. The other Uerige’s were good, but not big. I wasn’t expecting the "bigness" from this, and was quite a pleasant surprise. Very nice. ¾ (5003), Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 18, 2006 Updated: Aug 21, 2007Bottle, purchased in Ohio I think, August 2006. Pours a very dark caramelized bronze color with a creamy tan head. Moderately sweet nose, full of black cherries, light char, some funky, yeasty toast scents. Properly crisp, creamy as well, toasted cherries and plums noticed, with a dry char flavor throughout that is really nice. I like the idea of this beer, a double altbier basically, and I love the flavor and palate even better. One of the best beers I’ve had in a while.
After another bottle it hit me - doppel altbier is just like barley wine... toasty, sticky sweet malts with a big hop scent and good bitterness... seriously, drinking this thinking "barley wine" and you’ll get it. Still, one of my favorite beers ever. duff (5475), Surrey, Greater London, England
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 15, 2006 Bottle. Deep amber, slightly hazy. Aroma is sweet and malty, with a raisiny/dark fruit scent. Mouthfeel is very sweet. caramel, nuts, lots of raisiny dark fruit. Couldn’t detect too much in the way of hops, perhaps some light grassyness or something, but you have to search for it. I prefer the regular Sticke to this. this is probably just a touch too sweet for me. Brigadier (1246), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA

I got this from my Secret Santa. It looked interesting, especially with the
flip top design so while bottling some wedding beer, we popped it open. It
is pretty unique; the label is spot on is describing this as a German attempt
at a barley wine. I have since seen it locally for $4.50. As good as it was,
I am unlikely to buy another bottle except as a gift.
Aroma / Appearance - The nose was a vinous combination of caramel,
cherries, wheat and dark bittersweet chocolate. The body was a
semitransparent amber color with a thin layer of clear lacing.
Flavor / Palate - The dense creamy mouthfeel quickly filled every
corner of my mouth and throat. It coated my tongue in a mixture of vanilla,
caramel, chocolate, whole wheat bread and limes. The alcoholic presence
comes out eventually but never overwhelms the palate. This was enjoyable
and easy to drink, though I can’t see finishing more than one in a night. stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA
