Commercial Description:
Uerige DoppelSticke might just be "Germany's interpretation of a barley-wine", ie a third definition next to England's "malt-driven" idea {such as JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale} and America's "hop-heavy" version {such as Sierra Nevada's BigFoot}. OG - 1085; IBU - 75; Ingredients; Hops:Spalt Spalter, Hallertauer Perle, Spalt Hallertauer; Malts: Pilsner malt, caramel malt, roasted malt

Bright dark amber w/ creamy finger of pale tan foam. Aroma of grassy hops & sticky caramel. Light, mildly sticky feel. Flavours are well-balanced w/ a light herbal spiciness.

(11.2 oz bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/portland/ target=blank>Downeast Beverage Co.) This beer pours a murky, dark iced tea color with about 1 1/2" of biscuit head. Has a pretty intense brown sugar aroma with a bit of fruity hops discernible as head recedes. Some bits of lacing that don’t last long. Mouthfeel is big, warm, smooth and full. The flavor is big brown sugar and malt. Finishes with just the slightest hint of bitterness, and very, very slight hint of sour. No alcohol apparency. I loved this one right from the start.

From the (elegant!) bottle.

Pours a slightyly orange-brown amber, with an ample just-off-white head.

The aroma is terrific - rich caramels, apricots, a pinch of agar, maybe some detergent, a whiff of alcohol; the beer really shines in its flavor, which is somewhat sweet, caramel with abundant orchard stone-fruit; rich with a pleasing bitter walnut turn on the finish. Mouthfeel is full, creamy, rich, and thoroughly enjoyable; the alcohol buirn is masterfully hidden so that one tastes a 7% burn while enjoying a beer with a 10% palate.

As the beer warms to room temperature, it comes to its full glory. This is a lovely beer, well described by the commercial comparison to a barley wine. I’ll be back.

Dark amber with a slight haze. The head is light tan and fine. The aroma is musty and rich with malt and dried plums dominating. The body is heavy with a strong malt flavor that drowns out everything else.

Bottle and served in my GL snifter: Pours a ruddy brown with a nice tan head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of white raisins, crab apple, caramel and toasted malting, herbal hops, hint of pipe smoke, and a dusty yeast ester.

The taste starts with a heavy dose of malt and fruit but is interestingly supported by some grassy and lightly peppery hop. Strange that I get more of a fig character which was not on the nose throughout the flavor profile. The aftertaste is a bit oxidize and "barleywine-ish". Needs to air out and settle for full flavor integration. The feel is sticky and surprisingly sharp, dry and woody on the finish with even some acidic twang. Are you sure this is not barrel aged because it sure seems so?

This grew on me as the first taste was not so nice but as I adjusted it became a nicely drinkable dopple/alt/barleywine hybrid.

Dark with a hint of rid. Small off-white head. Malty nose, hints of chocolate and raisin. Well balanced flavor, big malt and german hops. Smooth finish. Thick, chewy mouthfeel. This is pretty awesome.

Bottle. Brown body with a big creamy head that fades fairly quickly. Sweet malty aroma of caramel and light notes of toasty malt. Flavour is malt dominant, quite sweet with lots of caramel with a light malty tang/bite that is pleasant. Alcohol is virtually invisible aside from a warming feeling in the throat and the aftertaste. Medium palate is quite smooth. Lacks complexity t times, but it is delightful in its simplicity.

[bottle dated 4/18.. 05?] Dark brown color, short but dense head makes its way down the glass. Aroma is grassy hops. Flavors are wonderfully smooth, caramel malts, chocolate, and roasty sweetness. Hops finish things off in an unexpected way, but seem to balance things out. Alcohol content is very well hidden. This is an excellent brew- a very nice surprise.
