I was stunned to see this was a altbier. I figured it was a doppelbock. It doesn’t taste like most doppelbocks but its more like a doppel than an altbier imo. Pours a dark brown thats rather clear. Decent sized light chocolate head. Aroma was very malty with some raisins and caramel. Flavor was almost like an english barleywine. Super smooth with alot of sweet caramel, a decent bit of smoke and some spiced raisin bread. Finishes with just enough hops to keep things balanced. This is very very good. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 30, 2009 On tap. Dark brown pour with the slightest hints at ruby on the edges. A short, light-tan head that produced bits of lacing. The aroma was mostly malt and spice that gives way to some floral and piney hops. The flavor was neat, smokey malt that quickly transitions into bitter hops on the backside. A Frankenstein-like creation of some dopplebock and an IPA. The body is thin to medium, the finish crisp. An interesting beer. coyotehunter (551), , Michigan, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 20, 2009 Courtesy MrBunn. Smells of brown sugar, molasses and dark fruit. Pours a dark brown, with a decent head. Almost like a barleywine. Good alcohol warmth on the way down. Rather sticky and sweet. End is a bit more than I would care for. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 20, 2009 Sweet bottle with a stopper. Pours a ruby brown with a small tan head. Aromas are a nice enough mix of brown sugar, alcohol, topsoil, spice and raisins. Flavor is thick and sweet up till the very end when it gets a blast of ABV and spice. That said, this is a fairly smooth beer up till that moment... where it breaks down a bit and becomes just a bit rugged. BustedFlat (554), Edina, Minnesota, USA

Malt aroma with a hint of spice. Taste of nuts and strong fruit flavor. Wonderfully drinkable. Thanks Nathan. Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 3, 2009 Bottle, picked up at John’s Grocery in Iowa City, IA. Opened with Tom at the "What this town needs is an IHOP" tasting. Rich brown pour, nice slowly devolving tan bubbles. Aroma of sweet raisiny yeast rolls, earthy cinnamon. Rich soft leathery malt, elegant and full. Woody hop finish. A generous, warming and elegant beer. If this is Germany’s answer to the barleywine, it is one compelling bit of dialog. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 20, 2009 Bottle. Black-brown, practically opaque with lots of lacing. Dark malt. Pumpernickel dough aromas include caraway spicing and raisins. Syrupy mouthfeel. Really malty, thick, sweet, bready and not burnt but caramelized. Has a nice spicy quality, I like it.
