| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 3, 2009 Bottle, picked up at John’s Grocery in Iowa City, IA. Opened with Tom at the "What this town needs is an IHOP" tasting. Rich brown pour, nice slowly devolving tan bubbles. Aroma of sweet raisiny yeast rolls, earthy cinnamon. Rich soft leathery malt, elegant and full. Woody hop finish. A generous, warming and elegant beer. If this is Germany’s answer to the barleywine, it is one compelling bit of dialog. Pumpernickel dough aromas include caraway spicing and raisins. Syrupy mouthfeel. Really malty, thick, sweet, bready and not burnt but caramelized. Has a nice spicy quality, I like it. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 18, 2009 Gift from Nathan. Pours a dark brown with a hint of cranberry hue. Aroma is...fun? Like Caribbean Punch. I can smell the rum and pineapple juice distinctively. Malt is present as well. Flavor is full of malt and yeast. Nuts and dark fruit flavors are in mid swallow. It is slightly bitter on the finish. Palate was a touch chalking, I thought. I can’t keep my nose out of this one though. Schultsc (486), Henderson, Nevada, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 9, 2009 Bright clear brown-amber with a fine, medium-dense off-white head. Full, classically "German" aromas along with fruity fermentation esters, a touch of nutty malt, and some caramel. The flavor is a bit disarming at first in that it offers much fuller character from an aroma profile not normally associated with such dimension. The malt is well represented in the body alongside nutty flavor and intriguing yeast notes. A pleasant surprise. FezMonkey (268), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Alcohol flavor up front, giving way to hop and malt and a somewhat spicy finish. Great brew.
