aroma was deep malt characters backed by some oak and brown sugar. Dark fruits lend a touch of spice in the nose as well. Strong and pleasing. [9]
flavor is very barley infused with a bright almost peppery heat initially. [75]
palate is a bit thin [2]
overall a joy on the eyes and nose and while it doesnt falter too badly on the tongue it felt like it could have been more. tarheels86 (808), Washington DC, USA

Pours a clear dark amber/ reddish-brown with almost no carbonation and a beautiful beige cap that lasts for a while leaving good sheets of lacing. Aroma is incredibly sweet and malty with some raisins, prunes, figs with some roasted and earthy notes. Taste is well balanced with some spicy alcohol up front with dry, bittering hops complementing the heavy caramel malt. Finish is dry and tart with some excessive soapiness but I’ll let it slide. kp (8500), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 10, 2009 330 mL bottle. Cloudy brown with little head. Aroma is somewhat medicinal, with some licorice, chocolate and alcohol. Lots of malt in the flavour. Some chocolate and dark fruit. Sweetness is balanced just enough by the hops. Very full and creamy. A little alcohol at the end. Very good. S: Sweet, figs, malts, smoky
T: Raisins, too much as a matter of fact. Some bitterness, sweet. Almost too complex, each taste spins my buds a round. No balance.
M: oily coating, little carbonation.
D: Tough to finish the whole bottle. I much prefer the Alt. Doesn’t do it for me at all.

Thick, dense head - wasn’t expecting that. Sweet aroma - lots of malts, and honey-glazed dark fruits. Flavor is right on line - very sticky sweet, but not offensively so. The flavor is still mostly malts - there’s a hop presence, but it’s very slight. Low carbonation. Surprisingly drinkable. wilkie (1192), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
