RagallachMC (631), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Jan 21, 2007 11.2oz bottle. Aroma: Good sweet maltiness with a nice toffee note. Alcohol and dark fruits seem to twine together in an aroma similar to rum raisin. Some bready yeastiness and a bit of spiciness. Appearance: Poured a murky reddish brown. Off-white head was small, creamy, and short lived. Not much lacing. Flavor: Medium-sweet maltiness with some caramel and raisin. Alcohol is noticeable but merges well with th rest of the beer. Some light earthy hops into the finish. Sweet but not cloying finish. Medium-light bitterness. Palate: Medium-full bodied. Low carbonation. Light alcohol warming in back of mouth. Overall: Very ’barleywine-esque’. Lots of good malt flavors. Low carbonation kept me from scoring this higher.
DSG (997), Yuvalim, Israel Nov 28, 2008 (10/16/08) Bottle at friends’ house in Philadelphia. Hazy dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of lots of malt and caramel, a bit of cookies, a bit of alcohol and some vinous fruity notes. Sweet malty flavor with caramel, some dark fruits (plums notes, some grapes) and a bitter dry finish with some slightly herbal hops, a light citric touch and a bit of alcohol. Medium to full-bodied. Really interesting stuff. I like it. Dogbrick (2348), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 27, 2008 Sample at the Columbus Ratebeer gathering at ogglethorp’s 11/20/08: This Altbier is a pale amber-orange color with a medium and creamy beige head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Malty aroma with notes of dark fruit and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of malt, molasses and hops. Warming alcohol is evident at times. The finish is full and malty with a bittersweet malt and hops aftertaste. Another enjoyable Alt from this brewer. daknole (1122), Plantation, Florida, USA Nov 26, 2008 Tasting at Brewtopia. Cloudy reddish pour wtih a very small head. aroma is really malty with some caramel, toffee, and sweet fruit. Flavor is again very malty. Caramel and toffee are everywhere/. Smooth and enjoyable without a doubt! blutt59 (948), Dallas, Texas, USA Nov 18, 2008 great bottle, red brown colored pour, aroma of strong malts, flavor is malty with a big floral, perfumed note on a dry bitter finish KnN (350), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Oct 27, 2008 Pours a muddy reddish brown with little to no head. Aroma is sweet malt and alcohol, but mostly malt. This is such a malt heavy sweet complex beer, the first sip literally made me say ’’woo!’’ This beer is all about the malt and it does malt very well. Sweet and bready, with a twinge of bitter backend and a nice alcohol bite. This was a really nice beer.
