Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 5, 2008 Pour is hazed amber with a thin off white head...smell is sweet with bread and caramel and then a nice lightly floral hop scent....taste is faintly sweet with ccaramel, then a nice strong floral bitterness comes in...nice lingering finish.... renffisch (495), london, Greater London, England Mar 11, 2008 Swingtop with ethereal. Nose was earthy, woody and a bit cheesy. Looks of darkest amber, little lacy head, heavy sweet caramel notes with a wheighty alcohol taste. too fizzy, would be quite drinkable with a bit less carb. shendrix (478), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Mar 8, 2008 Smooth and clean, but I’m missing the complexity that some others find with this one. Grassy notes mixing together with alcohol and caramel malts. Refreshing. Ethereal (1500), London, Greater London, England Mar 8, 2008 500ml swing top bottle, 28th Feb 2008. Pours a dark amber with a line of head. The aroma is earthy and malty with a cheesy and yeasty character. Very malty at the start of the sip but then the subtle bitterness comes through. Quite fiery alcoholic warmth on the finish. Flavoursome but flawed. MrRain (415), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Feb 21, 2008 Bottled poured into a Kölsch glass. US pours muddy brown with a reddish tint. The head is large and attractive. The nose is reminiscent of SweetTarts, malt and dark fruit. Altbiers are gulping beers but the alcohol in this one may deter some from gulping (but I’m happy to say I’m not detered!) Despite the sweet smell the flavor is more akin to dirt, wet grass and green hops all held together with a malty epoxy. This beer is surprisingly complex. There’s still a flavor that hits the back of your throat in the after taste that I can’t quite identify. Umm Umm Good! Radek Kliber (3926), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada Feb 19, 2008 Bottle 330 ml (swing top)
Appearance: Clear black-tea amber like . Strong tanned creamy top. Good lace created 4-. Nose :Clean, refreshing hop nose , clean sweet malts , softer aromas of mashed malt followed 7+. Flavor/Palate : Big malty front but not heavy as you might expect , earthy- woody flavors followed. Midlle was sweet, caramel like. Sticky texture neatly worked with showing bittering hops. Late smooth gentle warmth of alcohol. Quality is apparent.
MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Feb 13, 2008 A Mes rate: Bottle at Battersea Beer Festival. Dark dark amber with a thin off white rim. Really nice German malt aroma with some excellent earthy notes and a pleasant lick of alcohol. Let down a little by a sweaty hint but it doesn’t really spoil it. Good balance of malt and hops in the mouth with some nice tobacco notes next to a delicate candy sugar sweetness. Lovely finish. Decent all rounder. mtoast (290), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 10, 2008 33cL bottle. Vigorous pour yields a hazy brown liquid with fairly thick tan foam that fades rapidly yet leaves decent lacing. Rich toffee like aroma, little bit of metallic earhy hoppiness in there also. Big chewy maltiness with a very dry earthy hop finish. Good stuff.
